Ok gang, this is my beloved VT, I love the bike, but since I got rid of my NRS, I want it to be a tad lighter.
It's coming in at abotu 28.5lbs right now, any suggestions?
The tires aren't tubeless, they're Hot S 2.2" with tubes.
Thinking of maybe Stan's alloy rotors, but that's all I can think of...
Anyone?

I'd be willing to bet a few bucks that it's one of the lightest VT's on the trails.

You could....

Go 2x9 and loose a chainring
Cut off the excess seatpost sticking out of the seat tube
Loose the bottle cage
Get a lighter seat
Eat only 1000 calories for 10 days

Well lets see. First I'd swap out the frame for a nice hardtail. Then I'd ditch all that shifting stuff.... ;)

My ass needs 3 rings, I could maybe take off the outer 2 rings...:)
Thinking of going to a carbon post, but the seat must stay (see above...:))

Try some lighter tires. Mosquito or Python airlites are feathery, work great and are pretty damn wide for 2.0" tires.

28.5 is right in my ball park. I built a small XTC hardtail with disks at 27 LBS!!! And I can climb on it all day.

My **** *22 weighs in at 28.5 now that it has disks - climbing on that is no problem either.

My suggestion is too eat smaller meals. :D

I should be happy, but I'd honestly like the lightest bike I can build. It's kind of a project, see how light I can get a L VT, without making any compromises in components.

Well what does that fork weigh? My SID weighs 2.8, I think the race version is 2.64. If I swapped the SID from my **** *22 with the marzochhi on my hardtail - it would loose 2 lbs.

But then my blues would clash so I ain't gonna do it. ;)

Fork isn't super-light, probably 4 or 4.25lbs or so. I was thinking maybe that Maverick fork or something...

Alas, I'm over the 180lb weight limit for the Triple-Ti's. I could rock the Twin Ti pedals, those aren't too bad. I do love the EggBeaters though.

Your Titec AL-235 seat post is, assuming its 350mm - 304.5 g
You can swap to Thompson, Tune or USE and shave 100g off easy or more.

About tires, are you using UST ? (tire is where you would shave most weight) or Tubes or Latex ?
If you convert to Latex you can shave alot of weight since your not using Boat Anchor UST tires. Lets say your changing to Latex
250g average (both wheels) for Stans and Eclipse and good decent 2.0-2.35 tires weigh 400~600g and you can also shave huge watt from rolling resistance.

Shave off another 150g by changing all your bolts to AL or Ti combo.

Egg Beater 289g how bout Corratec Easy Click Ti 243g

XT Disk Brakes weight Average of 900g.
Magura Marta weighs 700g average or Hayes Mag-plus under 800g, Hope Mini's also under 800g .

I think Easton EA70 Stem is around 200g or more save 50-100g by going to FSA XC-120 151g or Syntace f99 99g which is strong and stiff than most stem out there.

Sram 9.0 Casette weighs 294g, Stronglight is 204g, XTR is 240g XT is 260g, Inferno 149g. Shave 40-140g here.

The Easton XC riser carbon bars weigh average of 150g-160g depending on length 620mm is longest i believe.

Hope this helps. Oh and rolling resistance would make the most difference.

The post and handlebar swap will lighten for sure. Going tubeless will as well, and you'll notice it more. I can't believe the Race weighs as much as it does, my Pyslo SL weighs that or less - could be due to the shorter steerer. Go to a lighter cassette and you're set.

I think it's plenty light right now though.

Yeah, we both know, but you know, this is much easier!
As for Sat, sorry, I can't make it. We're having our sales meeting this weekend, so I'll be tied up all day, both days...
On the plus side I get to play with all the cool new stuff for next year...:)

Let's hear it for cro-mo parts!

Thanks guys, this is exactly what I was looking for. My bike-buddy isn't in the office anymore, so I need to go elsewhere for ideas.
I think I'm gonna swap the seat (same seat/size/everything, just a little lighter), I've been thinking of going to latex in the tires, but haven't had a chance yet. UST tires are too heavy, plus when I cut my last one, I got a little jaded.
So maybe Stan's latex and some alloy rotors? Stem too, maybe that FSA, they make nice stuff, or the Maverick since the fork has it's own stem. I'll have to look into that...:)
This is pretty fun...

Remember Pyslo race is lighter than Matitou Black or Fox Vanilla and Marz etc... Pyslo SL also weighs more than the Race.

I'd skip the Maverick James, DC's suck to climb with. One hard knee to crown impact is all the convincing I needed.:dead:

Stem, post, tubeless. This alone could be good enough for almost a pound.

I think the cheapest and easiest way to lose weight is, change the Seat Post, Seat, Stem, Handlebar, Casette and Tires. Biggest change you will actully feel when riding is from Tire and Tube. Eclipse or Stan will save 5w from each wheel so 10w total. And Tioga Red Phoenix has one of the worst rolling resistance and ride quality. I think Schwalbe, Continental and Nokian (NBX series) are best in terms of rolling resistance and grip.

Ok, I admit I didn't read everyone elses ideas so if I repeat, forgive me. I'm not a weight weenie myself but some I ride XC with are true WW.

Fork: Could go SID but I never would, keep the Psylo
Wheels: Ditch the XMax and go for American Classic hubs laced to Valiants or 317s. (SPAM - our new rims are going to be extemely light, check them out at IB)
Tires: Kenda Karma Stick Es, 480g is the heaviest and we've had them at 437g for a true 2.0
Stem: Ritchey WCS or my personal favorite a Thomson
Bar: Easton Monkeylite SL if you like a little rise
Post: Easton EC70
Seat: Could go lighter than Laser but that's what I ride and like
Cranks/BB: either keep as is or switch to FRM ISIS BB and cranks
Brakes: Formula B4SL with Stan's rotors, Martas would be a close second

Other things would be swapping bolts, lose the bottle cage, go tubeless just because, etc.

Good luck.

Well, I think I'm gonna stick with the seatpost, maybe bar and maybe stem for now. Probably alloy rotors too, and maybe Stan's sealent. I'll look into the bolts, and the fork is probably a pipe dream.
UST would be heavier, albeit not too much more than what I'm running right now. I don't think I want to go any more "XC" with the tires, it is a 5"/6" travel bike after all...
XTR cranks would be pretty sweet, but spendy. We'll see, thanks for all the tips guys!

Yeah, isn't that how it is at your office? Right now I have my VT, my cube-mate's MCM bike, and his new MCM frame in here. My OCR and XTC are in the bike rack by the door...
I don't think so, but you could always send your resume in, see what happens...
