Do you carry e-tube spares and a laptop on your rides? I do carry a spare shifter cable when I know I'll be away from civilization for a while. All I need to change it is a couple Allen keys. That doesn't apply to e-tubes.
On the other hand, when my Di2 cable died a grinding death the fallback behavior was for the derailleur to remain in its current gear. Unless a reverse sprung XTR derailleur of olde then most conventional derailleurs would snap right to the smallest cog, afaik.
