Maintaining Sanity During Injury??

I took a pretty good digger this weekend at the ProGRT at Highland and it looks like I'll be off the bike for roughly 3 months. I'm trying to come up with a list of interesting/fun/stimulating things to do while I can't ride in order to maintain my sanity. Some of the things I've come up with so far are becoming fluent in Spanish, and learning a new musical instrument. I'd love some input from fellow riders, maybe you guys have some other ideas I can add to my list. Thanks everybody.

while I recovered from a broken neck/back I finally go a digi slr and really got into photography, it allowed me to stay involved in the scene even though I couldn't ride, and it's presented me with some really cool opportunities a few years down the road, blessing in disguise? possibly since it probably wouldn't have happened otherwise....3 months ain't no thang, people deal with much worse all the time.

Focus on healing and doing things to aid your recovery. I hate to say it, but booze isn't good for healing.

Get on physical therapy as soon as possible (depending on what the injury is and when your doctor clears you to start).

Besides that, get familiar with all of the bike forums, go to races and heckle as much as possible, watch movies, read, play video games. The new MX vs. ATV: Alive game just came out. That should give you plenty of things to do.

First time I busted my ankle I bought a used guitar and got some 'learn to play' videos. I was gung ho for a couple months and then once the rehab started I realized I didn't get good enough to really plant the desire to keep playing in me. I have hardly touched it since.

Second time I broke my ankle I bought a remote control heli and learned to fly it. Really enjoyed that but found it to be a tad pricey a learning curve. Pretty dang fun though and quite a challenge, something I will probably pick back up in earnest as I get older.

That and video games/internet/computer and more quality time with the girlfriend and the months went mostly quickly. At least the season isn't into full swing yet so heal fast buddy.

I 2nd a question for advice but for someone who has his arm in a cast (so no musical instruments etc.)

I thought about perfecting my german. Monkeys what do you advice on learning languages? Ie. how to do it without a course? (or is it the only option?)

btw. In my opinion watching bike movies sucks for recovery. They only make you angry or sad you are not riding. I don't want to be pumped for something I can't have. At least in my case. It made me try to ride a fixed bike with one hand. Nearly killed myself ;)

I just got released after a 9 month knee injury. I smoked a lot of pot and rebuilt my bike from the floor up about 30 times. I definitely lost my sanity, not being able to ride f*cking sucks.

EDIT:
Go get MX vs ATV. It works great with the therapy mentioned above.

Watch your wife give birth to your first child and learn how to be a dad. Just don't complain about your cast within the first months of her giving birth!

Worked for me! :thumb:

Sam sorry to hear about your injury....and in your first race in pro too! I know Ollie is bummed to loose his practice/car pool buddy.

This was the first time I was at a race as a spectator and it was pretty cool to watch....so maybe you can do some of that...plus you Drummer boys are by far the loudest track side cheerleaders!

Healing vibes.....

I broke my tib / fib back in November of 2009 and was off the bike til early February 2010. I drank quite a bit and caught up with friends (outside of bikes) but as soon as I was able to start exercising, I started rock climbing in my walking boot... I'd crutch / hop up to the wall, tie in, and start climbing. As long as you are cautious, it works totally fine and the hippy chicks love it.

I played a lot of forza and gran tourismo. Believe it or not, I actually got faster because I really learned entry/exit points on corners and how to balance entry to exit speed.

Very funny that you suggest this. I love Forza and that was the first video game I put in when I got home from the hospital. However, I found it pretty challenging to hit entry/exit points of corners when looped out on pain killers lol. Instead I was lucky enough to catch a Top Gear marathon.

I bought a ps3 when I had my shoulder surgery but I barely used it - preferred hanging out with real people..

so I should start coming to keene and we'll do some drinking. Once the weather is good start coming to the farm and playing horse shoes, then we can sit on the deck and grill, drink whiskey, rip butts and shoot any birds that dare enter our land. There have been a ton of wild turkeys lately.

also my parents are coming up with a list of work for you to do with a bum leg if you need cash.

Getting on a bike seems that much better after injury, this was just the crappiest timing ever.

I feel your pain. Broke my collarbone 2 weeks ago. Tough to have injury right when riding season arrives but at least we'll both be riding again this year (2-3 months for me). I've shied away from the booze for the time being as I read it can sometimes inhibit bone growth and I want to recover as fast as possible. I've been reading a lot, hanging with my lady and plan on planting the garden next weekend after the labor aspect is done (rotitilling). I can at least walk though so I guess I'm in a better spot than you. Good Luck!

I lost a whole summer due to lyme disease but am 100% now. Spend the time healing up properly, you will be glad you did even if it gets a little slow. Try to enjoy some of the little things that you may take for granted day to day. For me since I couldn't be that active, I got to spend a lot of quality time playing with toys and games with my little kids.

Best of luck with your recovery :thumb:

takes more then 3 months...
yeah, I suppose a little planning is required...

but, to the OP, my previous injury to that little "incident", I watched lots of mtb movies, and pretty much 5 seasons straight of 24... on second thought, mabe that wasn't a good idea.

good luck with the healing, and take the time to hang out with your buddies...

My own world inside my head
I was out with a knee injury, told to go back in, not the injury had reared its ugly head. Gives it a little extra suck there...... I want to ride, I want to go bomb some fun ass local trails..... But my knee just wont hold up to the task currently. I am currently wearing a brace everyday just to keep from falling... Really hate wearing a brace.

How am I keeping my sanity? Im not... I have lost it a very long time ago. on a more serious note though, this is why it is good to have multiple hobbies, for me its all about riding, camping, or fishing. Even better when I get to combine some of those. Other than that, I work around the house as I can, fix what needs to be fixed/what I can afford to fix...... and just get through it....
