And I think we had a pretty good time. We fished in and around Pisgah, which Ive never been to, so it was a good experience, plus I learned where to find fish and a bunch of old men clad in gortex. Biggins, i think, ended up catching 8 trout, and me, well, I caught only ONE, but it was the first fish of the day, so **** it.

Here are some pictures, I think biggins has one or two himself.

Actually out here we wouldn't even have considered those having "caught" a fish. ;)

They were probably scared of the big fish swimming around and were looking for protection :thumb:

Only those who fish this part of the Apps can understand and appreciate catching NC trout regardless of the size. Trout here are illusive, big trout are rare, going all day without catching a fish at all is typical. Here it's more like a hunt than getting to pull out catches all day long so even the smallest trout feels like an accomplishment. In 10+ years I have only caught a few trout big enough to keep (granted I don't fish the big streams).

I know a few places where you could catch and release 2 dozen trout half that size in about an hour. I don't like to eat fish so I think it's a hoot to go out and catch itty bitty fish all day long, sure beats sitting around waiting for a big one to bite. It's a good way to get kids into fishing too, if they can catch a fish on the second or third cast they just might keep fishing all day.

Amazing. People actually knocking others for not catching big enough fish. I love RM.
It pretty much just goes to show how little people understand about flyfishing for trout at all.

its not necessarily the size or number of fisah caught its the experience as a whole. hell just the fact that burly and myself actually got along all day without talkin politics and drowning each other in the river was a good experience.

Please you could say your favorite color was blue on RM, and people will argue with you.

Trolling for trouble and porn is what the internet is for anyway, right?

Where the wild things are
Flyfishing is definitely about the experience, the fact that you guys went out and actually did something fun as friends and got away from computers, people, and things that are out of the ordinary gets my support, no matter how many or how big of fish you caught. Speaking of this makes me want to grab my flyrod and head up to the river right now, in fact I think I will this evening. Thanks for the idea fellas.

Not tryin to be a dick but them trout are pretty dinky though, must be a higher mountain river/creek?
............
Meh fishing.... ride across rivers and scare the trout.... that's more fun! :D

They were just freshly stocked fish for the most part. We saw ALOT of bigger ones but there were so many people out fishing that we didnt stand a chance of catching anything big. Just too many freaks out on the water.

Consider yourself learnt.
You dont bust on the size of a guys' trout, unless you catch one bigger yourself. This is common knowledge.

You want a real experience come up north and try some ice fishing. We don't have trout streams here but I would love to learn to fly-fish one day.

Ive done some Ice fishing. All I can say is that it was cold and not terribly exciting or fun. In fact, I was pretty miserable, and we ended up catching like 10 stupid ass little perch all day. This was in wisconsing BTW. They have some trout streams up north, just do a google search. Take a flyfishing class from your local trout unlimited chapter. Its all good.

Good job, guys!!! While I spend the majority of my time these days saltwater flyfishing, my learning experiences flyfishing were spent in the NC mountains trying to stalk some of those elusive puppies(and trying to untangle leader from rhododendrons)! Thing about NC mountain flyfishing, is that everything is so incredibly tight, and the high mountain streams are so narrow and clear, that in order to get your line out to the fish, you have to be not only a great and imaginative caster, but you also have to be a stealthy hunter to boot. Don't let the rest of the masses talk smack about the size.....we've got plenty of big fish up there, and they don't have the unique pleasure of living in a state where you can catch a mountain trout, hop in the car for a few hours and catch a sea trout!! Tight lines, yo!
