Mr. GG just had surgery so we will be in mega-movie mode here shortly.. So we've seen a lot. We're on the flat fee program at our local store but we have just added Netflix due to the somewhat limited selection.

Looking for recs:
Thrillers/suspense( not too many dead bodies)
Action, good plots help.
Heist flicks ( seen a lot of these)
Really funny stuff ( most of Hollywood's sophomoric crap doesn't qualify)
Great adventure classics ( Great Escape)

I know I can count on you monkies....

Way Downtown is way better than Office Space IMO. There Will Be Blood amazed me.

I watched The Strangers only 'cause Liv was in it and it was horrible.

My 2¢.

If you like black comedies do yourself a favour and dredge a copy of Divorcing Jack.

Its Irish and might be difficult to find but would be worth it.

Thanks - I'll check someof those out. We've seen quite a few of the recs, but that's a good indicator that I should check out the rest of them.

Clerks
Mallrats
Chasing Amy
Dogma
Jay and Silent Bod Strike Back
Clerks II
The only things that Ben Affleck did ( with the exception of Goodwill Hunting) that are any good.

the producers (the new version is HILARIOUS)
That was a good one.

I've only got issues with Jim Carrey and anything with chimpanzees in it.

I watch a lot of documentaries and indie films and netflix has a good selection of them.
That is where our local chain store ( Hollywood) falls really short. It's great for new releases and mainstream-ish but jeez, they don't even have Dirty Harry. WTF? So I'm making lists now, what to get from where.

Ha! Yeah but its an orangutan in the those tremendous Clint flicks of the early 80's.

I have a few friends who cant stand Jim Carrey and I cant get them to even try "Dumb and Dumber." I maintain that it is one of the funniest movies of the 90s.

Also, regarding action I forgot the "Bourne" movies but you cant go wrong with them, especially the first one.

Also...."Training Day" with Denzel and Ethan Hawk. Fantastic flick.

I knew it was some kind of primate but I knew if I said "no movies with monkies" I might upset someone here:monkey:

Jim Carrey was SO funny on "In Living Color" but I just can't handle his movies.

Pick up a copy of Pan's Labyrinth if you can.

Thank You for Smoking was good.

If there's any way you can find a copy of "OSS 117 (Cairo, Nest of Spies)", a French comedy from a few years back that was released in English subtitles last year, it will be the best cinematic investment you can make. Truly, hysterically funny.

Ed: Oh, documentaries- try "Surfwise" and "Young at Heart"

Ed II: Netflix is also great for good TV series on DVD--"Deadwood" is simply unmissable IMHO. "Heroes" for some lighter (?) but still quality fare IMHO. And "Boston Legal" is really, *really* funny even if the politics are less than entirely subtle and the legal proceedings less than in tune with reality.

Netflix has all of these:

Scotland PA
Pecker, by John Waters (hilarious and not too weird)
Bullitt (with Steve McQueen)
Get Carter (the 1971 version, not the Sylvestor Stallone remake)
Amelie
Scarface, both the 1930's original and the 1980's Al Pacino remake

And of course, the usual Donnie Darko/Requiem for a Dream/Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels/Snatch/Reservoir Dogs/Fargo/Blow/etc.

:stupid: Try The Orphanage as well. Freakin' awesome movies.

If you can stomach Tim Allen, Galaxy Quest is a hoot. As is Spaceballs. How aboot Zoolander?

Memento
The Twilight Samurai

You could really geek out and do what I call "Dork of the Rings" and watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy back to back to back. Bonus dork points if you watch the extended versions.

If you guys like animation, stuff like Spirited Away and Grave of the Fireflies will be worth checking out too.

( scribbling more notes on the movies to look for list...)

You guys rock, and the best part is that I think some of us are on the same page more or less.

Pecker, by John Waters (hilarious and not too weird)
OMFG, that one was awesome, saw it years ago. It makes me wonder what you think would be really weird!:monkeydance:

Anyone seen Devil's Backbone? It's one he made prior to Pan's Labyrinth. Quite good imo.

Uh, I have two sons ( now 19 & 22) who I think wore the DVD's out in a zillion marathons. I may have to wait a few years to revisit this. Of course we have the extended versions.:clapping:

Ben Stiller is funny. All of those were pretty good, (mel brooks is awesome) more along the lines of what I can stand for humor.

In the "is it just me?" department: We ended up with Forgetting Sarah Marshall by default the other night, and to me it represents what is so lame about many American comedies. We kept waiting for it to get funny. It didn't go nearly far enough in any direction. Mr. GG's comment was that he was too stoned from the morphine to get up and turn it off.

Hope Mr. GG heals up quickly!

One of my favorite movies, which would fall under your suspense catagory, is Primal Fear. Richard Gere, Edward Norton, Laura Linney, great cast, great acting!

On the same lines, since I think Ed Norton is great, a heist movie is The Score. If you haven't seen it, you should ;) Marlin Brando, Robert Deniro, Ed Norton, great!

And for Funny, My Cousin Vinny is always a winner

There Will Be Blood (mentioned before but deserves another)
Appaloosa (not on DVD yet but highly recommended!!!)

other faves of mine include:
Inside Man
Thank You For Smoking
The Last King of Scotland
A History of Violence
Shottas (Jamaican version of Scarface, basically. starring Ky-mani Marley)

Nice list. I forgot about Rushmore. The scene with the Who's "A quick one" is fantastic.

Someone also mentioned Zoolander. That flick is so underappreciated IMO.
