I just moved from there so I think I can answer your questions.
The Riding Fool hostel in Cumberland is a great place and very reasonable. Also, it's above a bike shop and run by mountain bikers.
The trails are definitely more rocky and natural and the mountain in no way compares to Whistler. The place seriously needs a lot of work and they refuse to put any money into making it safe and fun. But it's better than nothing and you'll be able to find something to ride.
