Sounds like a good call on the part of MS. Maybe someday they will create another version of Windows that runs native on the PPC. Then PC users can reap the benefits of superior hardware and still run Windows. :thumb:

Microsoft Turns to IBM for Next Xbox Chip
1 hour, 27 minutes ago

NEW YORK (Reuters)
- Microsoft Corp. on Monday said it would turn to International Business Machines Corp. for microchip technology that it will use in the next version of its popular video game console, the Xbox.

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft, the world's largest software company, used a chip from the No. 1 microprocessor maker, Intel Corp., in the first version of its Xbox, which was released in 2000.
Richard Doherty, of Seaford, New York-based Envisioneering, a technology advisory company, said that IBM's PowerPC chips consume less power and run cooler than other chips. They compete with chips from Santa Clara, California-based Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc., a much smaller microprocessor maker in Sunnyvale, California.

"Intel had wrestled away the design win for Xbox from AMD at the last minute, and this will probably be quite a surprise to Santa Clara this morning that the next generation from their ally in system design, Microsoft, is going to their rival," Doherty said.

IBM, based in Armonk, New York, has licensed microprocessor technology to other companies and makes chips for Apple Computer Inc. and for the Nintendo gaming console, among others, in its factories.

IBM opened a new semiconductor plant in East Fishkill, New York earlier this year and has been trying to lure new customers to the plant.

The next version of Xbox is expected to be announced in January by Microsoft founder and Chairman Bill Gates and to be on sale next fall ahead of the holidays, according to Doherty.

IBM is also working with Sony Corp. on a chip for its next version of the PlayStation gaming console. Earlier this year, Nvidia, which makes graphics chips often used in gaming, also turned to IBM to start making certain of its chips.

PPC are more ideal in special purpose embedded devices like videogame consoles, PDAs, automobile computers, etc...

A lot of people don't realize it, but there hasn't been a true x86 PC chip since the 586(pentium). From the Pentium Pro (sextium :D ) onwards the guts of the CPU were basically RISC, so the x86 vs. RISC arguement is silly and there are better CPU setups than either out there right now...

There are plenty of general purpose PC CPUs which are superior. A single G5 is slower than a single P4, Opteron, Xeon, Athlon 64, or Power4(related to G5 - not sure about its cost) at the same pricepoint. A dual Xeon, Opteron, or Power4 system is also faster than a dual G5, you can check the SPEC database and see for yourself. All of the modern buses, videocards, memory standards, etc (even firewire was first in production on Sony PCs BEFORE Apple - pretty funny since its Apple's standard) debuted on the PC (hypertransport - AMDs had that first). Basically nothing cutting edge going on except for marketing in Apple's camp. Companies can't afford to spend tons of money in R&D for a such an minute percentage of the desktop computer market, it just doesn't make sense for them.

Nam I am
Well , Intel has sat on there X86 architecture for too long. they have been promising the ia-64 for how long now ? they Bought Alpha to kill it and companies are just getting impatiaent , and intel though they had a stangle hold. now it is reality slap time !

AMD beat them to the market with with 64 Bit , PPC is poised to take off ( finnaly ) MIPs has finally started to catch up, and Intel just can't seam to get 64 Bit to work. whileall these others have 64 bit working and out to market. it will be interesting.
