So I've been looking at some new rides. Here's what I'm considering:

Specialized Stumpjumper Expert 120 - SWEET frame, nice parts.

Giant Trance 2 - Awesome fit and feel, awesome price, kinda heavy

Santa Cruz Blur - nice of course but strange sizing? Seem really big?

Any other suggestions?

Yeah I was looking at the 100 also. They make the Epic in short travel though which is probably better than you think. I want a bike I can take to Moab and do some long hard trail rides more than I want a race bike at this point. I'll take the 120 and if I have the inclination to race again, I'll get a race bike later.

I have seen a few the new Giant's (Both the Trance and Reign) on the trail lately. IMHO they are much nicer looking in person.

Aaron, I'll tell ya, I'm riding the Trance right now, took apart my NRS to put it together, and I love it. I was initially not so sure about it, but the first ride convinced me. I was in love with my NRS Carbon, but the Trance blows it away as a non "race" bike in my opinion.
I haven't weighed mine yet, but I'll bring it in tomorrow, and weigh it and post it up. It's not heavy, it's not as light as my NRS was, but it's built with some slightly more "trail" worthy parts, ie not a SID Carbon, etc...:)
Still, as a 4" front and rear (Reba U-Turn on the front), dual-disc equipped, slightly wider tired bike, it's decently light, and pedals even lighter.
I don't even have a "platform" shock on there right now, waiting for my MC3, but even with the Float on there, it pedals damn well.
Though the SJ 120 is pretty damn sweet too. If I wasn't on the Giant right now, I'd for sure look at that as an option too...
My Reign is built up decently light too, I'd estimate around 28-28.5 pounds right now, not too shabby for a 6" bike.

The Specialized has a proven suspension design and seems like you get a lot for your $.

I own a Blur and I love it but I think it is a bit more money than the Stumper for a good one. What are your concerns about size? If anything the Specialized has a longer top tube than the SC on same size frames, unless my brain is failing me, which it probably is.

I love my 575... so that clearly gets my first recommendation.

If I were looking for a new ride, I'd look at the new giants (I'd probably look at the reign), the prophets, the racerX, and the 5spot.

I think you are right ghostrider - if anything I think SC top tubes are relatively short for their sizes. I always get stuck between a medium and a large when looking at any SC frames.

I have a 2004 Hollowpoint which rocks and the Mkiii is a significantly improved hence my recommendation.
My bf got a 2005 MK3 about 2 months ago and he's having some issues with it. He has to tighten up the rear linkage before every ride.

that's a warranty issue...Weagle has a thread about it somewhere on here. All he has to do is call Iron Horse up and they will take care of it...it's a pretty easy fix...D

are you even interested in the Iron Horse bikes? I was at Supergo today and they are already dropping prices on the whole line....800-300 off depending on the model of MK3...D

This is true. I was suprised that they didn't give the 5 anymore clearance. The Ruckus Flowta (6 inch front/rear) has more cause they still use the old eccentric BB. Perhaps the new I-Drive system doesn't let them give any more clearance. I'd stay away from the Flowta, those eccentrics generally suck, and the Flowta is a bike with an identity crisis.

So why don't they just use a curved top tube like everyone else?

Yeah but I don't think there is a local dealer and I'd like to ride a bike before I buy it.

Good way to confuse a purchase is to look at 50 bikes, with luck you can narrow the search sometime next year. :p

Check the BB level, the ONLY issue i had with my Enduro is the low level of the BB which lead to frustrating pedal hits and difficulty riding over rocks/logs and such. The Enduro has a flip link which solved my problem to an acceptable level.

Don't have any worthy advice other than you know how taboo it is to buy a first year run of a bike, with all the kinks that inevitably seem to appear. But my dealings with Giant were positive in dealing with warranty with the problematic VT.

Santa Cruz Blur
A "supposed" and i stress "supposed" release date of June for their Blur LT. A trail bike that will have the capability of putting on a 160mm fork. Obviously not your bag, but a blur where you can run a Talas and be balanced with a 135mm rear travel blur frame.

More travel does not necessarily mean less pedal efficiency nowadays.

Good luck man.

OK I did it. Anyone who hasn't ridden a Maverick should try one - they are great. I can't afford one of those right now so I got a 2004 Klein Palomino on sale. Price was right and spec is good - Fox fork, Hayes brakes, XT/LX. Just went on my first ride - it was like I've owned the bike for a year. Felt totally comfortable and familiar from the first pedal stroke. I will now celebrate by drinking beers.

I had one of those for a while earlier this year. I really did like the bike, but there was one fatal flaw in the bike, in my opinion: the rear disc brake mount is a bolt-on jobbie, not welded-on like most bikes. It seemed to work fine, but if I was on a longish descent, one where I would be using the brake a fair amount, the brake would howl and shudder relentlessly. It got to the point where I would choose to ride my hardtail instead of the Palamino on most rides, and I figured that there was no point to having a bike I didn't like to ride, so I stripped it, and built the Trance.
That's the biggest problem with Trek bikes, they all use bolt-on adaptors. That's fine for a bike like the Fuel, hey, it's a race bike, and if the racer can save 50 grams by not having a disc mount on his v-brake bike, fine. But on a 4" travel "trail" bike it's kinda of ridiculous.
Anyway, that was just my problem with the bike, maybe it was faulty or something, but I really did like the feel of the bike.
Congrats on the new rig, let's see some pics!

Maverick Suspension=i-Drive

I think Maverick has to pay GT money or something...I can't remember. Very horstlink-esque with the FSR patent.

Good choice. I approve :thumb:

Congrats on the new bike, RM. You have redeemed yourself. I would hate for the word to get out that the owner of a popular mountain biking website (who lives in one of mountain biking's best towns) doesn't even have a mountain bike. I will cancel the press release.
