Gotta get a lot of things done before Sat for the Parade of Homes but I figure I'll be close...

This house isn't sold yet but it will be soon. It will have Baltic Brown granite counter tops, stainless appliances with a cool 2"x2" tile back splash, and it will have wood laminate floors in the dining/kitchen/breakfast and tile in the baths/laundry room.

Ceiling details in front entryway looking at the dining room

Vaulted ceiling in the master bath. Arched window above the whirlpool tub

Looks nice, but I would like lighter cabinets. Suffice to say, way nicer than anything I see me living in for years to come.

The cab's are maple and if I had to do it over again I would probably use oak for such a dark stain. Maple is so tight-grained it was hard to deal with.

It is a 3b/3bath 1780 heated and will sell for $185k.

I do dig it. The inlaws cabinets are maple (I think) and there is one panel on a door that doesn't match. It drives me nuts. Cabinets are a tough one to do perfectly. Truly a difficult skill to master, staining is.

I just know the average bubba around here will probably stroke out when they see the turquoise strip around the shadow crown...

Very nice. My parents went with a similar look for the house they built. The crown moulding and the paint is more or less the same though a bit darker, or very similar. Granite and hardwood floors with slightly lighter cabinets, but a house in the similar style. 4br, 2.5bt, probably go for, well I don't even know.

I have a question. Depending on the size of the lot, a house like that would go for 600k+ in Santa Barbara, CA. How do building costs compare between LA and CA? It seems like if the costs are the same you could be making a much larger profit over in California. How do the building markets compare?

Any shots of the outside?

No exterior shots yet but I'll take some tomorrow.

Well, the cost of the lot has a lot to do with the overall cost of the home. A house like this will be in the $800k range in SB where land is priced crazy.

I figure the cost of construction material should be about the same (lumber, bricks, concrete). Labor will probably would be more out there since folks have to make big bucks to live out there... but CA has a lot of south of the border labor which could keep that cost in check.

I designed the trim details and my trim d00d makes it happen.

How high are the ceilings where the cabinets are?

Who picked the accent color?

I'm waiting for the day when all these "Moca" and "Latte" and "Chocolate" colors go out like blue wood paneling did.

I also f'ing hate the trendy "bowl basin" sinks they're about as trendy as asphalt siding.

  • Ceilings are 10'
  • I picked colors
  • Moca and Latte are the new Builder Beige
  • Bowl sinks haven't even made it here yet

Looks good N8. I'd love to make some changes/updates to my house but I barely have time to even sleep there and my brain is not wired to let me pay someone to do it for me. I have been building new oak cabinets for my kitchen for the last 4 years and haven't gotten any further than building the first few for "proof of concept". Somehow having a large pile of rough quarter sawn oak in the basement makes me feel good though.

  • Good thing they're 10' but the trim still looks a little deep
  • You watch to many HGTV shows
  • That doesn't make them good colors for an entire house
  • Have you even heard of wood paneling yet?

Is that Fypon(sp?) trim?

  • I personally don't like all the trim work, but I have mod/minimalist tastes, but folks here LOVE it
  • HGTV roxors111!!!!1!111
  • And you've built how many homes again?
  • Wood paneling is tres 70's chic
  • Trim is an MDF product that comes primed white

Note the home audio wires stubbed out of the wall on the left side of the fire place... the large flex is for various plasma DVI or HDMI cables etc.

I've built 4 homes, one resturant, one office building, one pole barn and worked on the designs of about a dozen homes, 2 car dealerships(Honda and Toyota), 1 Harrahs Casino in NJ, and there are many other jobs I'm omitting.

MDF really? Hrmmm in trim... I'll have to look into that.

All our desk tops here at the office are made from MDF and coated with a hell of a lot of poly.

I worked with Harrah's on their casino in Shreveport, La as a QC inspector right after I'd gotten my Elec Eng degree. Yeah, I've worked on numerous commercial projects too but spec home building is the only kind of construction I know of where you, the contractor, have to make ALL the decisions for everything... so you have to know your market quite well.

You counldn't even find a lot out here for $185K

I don't imagine you can. Assuming all other aspects of constuction are equal, i.e. material/labor costs... is it the cost of land that makes my $185k house a $1.1M house out there in SanFran?

Thats true and thats the reason I would never buy a spec house. :)

:)

Anyway when are we going to see exterior shots?

Yep pretty much it. A good lot of maybe 1/4-1/3 acre will sell for around $700K-$900K. Labor here is very expensive, a plumber out here on time & material will charge about $125-$150 an hour labor.

Post pictures again in 6 months after walls have started seperating and cracks have developed around windows, across the entire length of the foundation and across the garage floor... ;)

J/K...looks very nice. Except the hideous turquoise stripe.

When you say you've built these houses, what exactly is it that you personally do? Do you swing a hammer or are you more of a project manager or what? Just curious.
