I know a couple guys who won't ride anything else but 29ers anymore.

Then again, there are people who only ride unicycles...

These bikes will be available NEXT WEEK!

RPM components are entry level cranksets from FSA (Th Industries - Taiwan). Redline's been running them on the 26" Monocogs for 4-5 years with no reports of any problems. Good stuff and affordable.
Monocog 29er sizes are 15,17,19 and 21".

I'm a pussy, I need gears. If it was a rigid with gears, I would be temped. But I will stick to the Rigid One for now. 8 speeds are better than one.

It does look good though.

am I missing something... why is that such an amazing deal?

Seems like there are a lot of very solid HTs out there priced around $1000. Remove the fork and the gears (what, $450-$550 worth of stuff?) and the value of the bike falls right in line with this one.

Or is it more that there aren't many solid 29ers offered at this price point?

No there isn't.
