Saxo Bank-SunGard's classic specialist, Nick Nuyens played an important role in today's Belgian cobblestone classic, Dwars door Vlaandern where he created a solid gap to the other favorites in the finale and closed the gap to a front duo with Geraint Thomas (Sky) on his wheel.

And the Belgian Saxo Bank-SunGard rider was clearly the strongest of the four in the front group but he didn't get much support from the other riders in the group while the favorites organized a raging chase and slowly minimized the gap to the home ground favorite.

But the Belgian refused to be caught and he sprinted away from his followers and a galloping peloton breathing down his neck to a wonderful and unforgettable victory.

"I felt really strong from the start and when the race kind of stalled I put in a counter-attack and created the crucial gap. At the end of the race I wasn't sure whether the others in the break did't want or simply couldn't help but I put in everything and won. I'm really happy about the team's effort. Everyone has believed in me and this gives me moral and energy for the next races," concludes a happy Nick Nuyens.

”Nick truly shows what he is made of today and the way he wins is a strong proof that we're doing the right things on the team. I've noticed that Nick was getting stronger and stronger but it also takes a lot of guts and tactical cunningness to take it all the way and today, Nick demonstrates that he has still got it all and I'm obviously proud of his and the team's efforts,” says a happy team owner, Bjarne Riis.
