Court: No personal right to bear arms

Federal appeals court says 2nd Amendment refers to militias

ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 6 — A federal appeals court, upholding California’s assault-weapons ban, has decided that the Second Amendment does not guarantee individuals the right to bear arms.

Obviously I have too much time on my hands today....I think the ruling is right on. I support the right to bear "arms" but do we really need to have military style weapons in our homes when we have one of the most powerful militaries in the world defending our freedoms? There's got to be a limit. Next thing you know people will be buying missile launchers and validating their use of them with the second ammendment. They are arms after all.

Just my liberal $0.02. ;)

I don't know about the ruling........

I just think it should be really, really, really difficult to buy/get a gun...... but you should probably be able to get almost any kind of gun you want. I'm not happy about assault rifles, but I'm not in a hurry to totally ban them or something, I just think the process you have to go through to buy any gun should take........ at least a month? I wish the NRA would support stuff like that, but my impression is that they have the "Where will it stop, though?" attitude, and therefore oppose most gun regulating to begin with.

Neither. I'm just too short to join the regular services so I had to start my own. Pop bottles and beer cans are seditious little bastards - it' my job to keep them down.

that doesnt matter, this has potential nationwide implications
two different federal appeals courts have made dissimilar rulings on the same subject now it will go to the US Supreme for a decision that may or may not [depending on how they rule] have far reaching effect

Pfft!
Assault rifle my ass.

liberals like to call ar-15's assault rifles, but they are used to compete in the national championships every year at camp perry.

Take a regular 12-gauge, take off the walnut stock, put on a synthetic black stock and in some states, it is all of the sudden an "assault rifle"

i think 99% of the people rallying to get rid of certain guns have never shot a gun in their life.

ANY hunting rifle will rip through a kevlar vest. That means a 50$ cheapo .306 or a 5k$ "assault rifle"

I think it should be difficult to get guns. But once you start taking them away, its going to cause more problems than it is going to solve.

I think this assault rifle bs is just crap. Look at the damage malvo and his buddy did with a simple little hunting rifle. Are they going to ban those as well?

Change needs to come from the source, and that source is not the firearms....

I have been shooting recreationally since the age of about 14 and competed on the junior olympic shooting team and later at the national level. Never once did i meet a person who I thought was dangerous or a risk. And some of these people had federal permits for fully automatic weapons.

Just because a handful of thugs use a certain gun means nothing. You take away those guns, theyll just get them by other means or move on to the next best thing. Are you going to go right down the line and start banning stock .45 colts if all the losers in the country start using them?

Its a can of worms really...
But itll be a cold day in hell when i turn in a firearm I own because some suit in washington doesnt like the look of it.

um you hunt with this?this is what Malvo used
.223 caliber Bushmaster
The Bushmaster is a close replica of the M-16, which is the gun actually used by the U.S. military. The two models resemble each other closely. Both generally cost $700 to $900

No kiddin. .223 is like a little pellet gun compared to some of the large hunting cartridges out there.

and what exactly makes that bushmaster so bad?

let me guess:

It looks like a big bad military gun in its styling. Thats all.

Typically, the looks of a gun are the things that are stuck upon. That .223 is commonly outfitted with a match grade barrel and used in HP hunting and competition.....

The whole thing was a joke. Calling this loser a "sniper"...

any ten year old with minimal training could pull off the shots he was making. Media loves to militarize everthing possible to make it seem more deadly.

Lets all pick on the guns, then when people start sknifing each other, we will ban all the knives, then when they use clubs, lets ban the clubs.

Same people, different tools.

MAY have far reaching effect is the operative word. I'm not discounting the ruling...I just don't believe the Supreme Court would say that the amendment that says "Right to bear arms" doesn't 'really' mean "right to bear arms."

I think the whole "assault weapon" thing is bull****. I'd much rather have someone shooting at me full auto with an AK-47 than the .308 hunting rifle most of my uncles and neighbors had when I was growing up.

It's not like the movies people. You can't aim when you're on full auto. The whole ban is hysteria, plain and simple. It's an arbitrary law, and as far as I'm concerned those suck.

Some people are just so uneducated about shooting, and guns. It just sort of makes me mad when they get on here and start talking all this crap about a subject which the know nothing about.

Ooooh........a bushmaster .223. Holy crap! Look at it, its all black and scary looking and stuff.

Folks......if i had to get shot by any gun out there....other than a .22, it would be a .223.
That gun is far from an assault rifle. You could do more damage with a 4-10 and some slugs.

What gets me more than that, is that they assume making laws to stop people from getting guns will have any effect. I mean really now, do you think Malvo would have said ..."no way, guns are illegal...I'll just have to knife people"

NO. he wouldnt. All making laws like this would do, is take guns away from law abiding citizens who follow them. Not criminals...then tell me who has control.

The day i give up my weapons is the day they pry them from my cold dead hands after a serious exchange of fire. Because in that case, this country has gone way too far, and i wish not to be a part of it anymore. Luckily America is better than that....this ruling will go nowhere. I mean......look who the president is.

Guns are scary! We all should encourage our respective politicians to pass as many laws as it takes to make sure no one is scared; then we can all throw our guns in an incinerator and join hands while we sing a song.

Heres a lil pic of some targets.

They are enlarged so you can see the ten ring. Its that little white dot that is not punched out in the first pic. The actual targets are a little bigger than a quarter from edge to edge.

Second is my gun. Not too scary unless you're within 100 yards and larger than a dime.

Nice shootin, tick-tock. Are you standing when you shoot it, resting against your shoulder, or is it on a stand or table....?

How do criminals get guns? What methods, or laws would gun-owners support to stop kids, or gang-members, or criminals from getting them?

Why do gun-owners like their guns so much?

(not sarcastic here.... I'd love to hear honest answers)

I love guns--- their cool, but I was raised in a no gun household---So even though I like them, buying one, or using one, has never been a choice I've had to make.... just don't think about it.

I used to be really into BB guns, my buddy had a 1000fps one-pumper that could shoot through both sides of a burn barrel and the garbage inbetween. My explanation for why I like guns kinda detracts from a need or want to go buy one though... I think it's about power. Some people equate it to "an extension of your pee-pee", or something along those lines, but I don't see that. It's the ability to affect something, control something, change something, and perhaps kill something from a distance. To have a far reaching affect that you normally don't have--- authority, power, etc... I'm talking about everything here, from pop cans to--- well, I'm thinking of pop cans and birds.

Besides all the "working with your hands" and hobbiest aspects, (such as liking mechanical stuff, moving parts, working on a project--stuff that most hobbies have in common), that's my explanation for why people love their guns... and why I do even though I don't have any....

Actually, I think I like bb guns better than normal ones.

I cant remember actually where I got that pic from, its pretty old. Could have been any.

I shot three position, which is prone (laying down), Kneeling and Offhand. No telescopic sights and no external support (no benchrest, tripod etc) are allowed it most competitions.

I agree that guns are a factor of control. Just like things such as driving a powerful car or riding a super burly bike, its a matter of using skill to control an otherwise powerful and potentially dangerous tool.

Why do gun owners like their guns so much?
Well why do bike owners post pictures of their bikes and call it "porn"? Its a matter of perspective. To a non-rider, we are some serious freaks.

a far as the laws go, I think illegal use of firearms should be punished to an extreme. I support ANY law that prevents criminals from getting guns as long as it does not prevent an honest person from getting one. Many laws that come up do the opposite and prevent honest people from getting guns while doing nothing to prevent criminals.

Illegal sale of guns should be an offense on par with selling explosives or death warrants, imho.

Pellet guns are pretty awesome because the good ones have some serious power bt they quickly lose it as distance goes by due to the light weight of the ammo, so instead of the bullet going 4 miles and killing someone in another town, it might go a few thousand yards at max. people treat them like toys, however, which is wrong. I have a .22 caliber pellet air gun that shoots at 1100 fps. That is just slightly less velocity than a normal .22, and uses only a slightly less heavy round.

Then again, any moron 16 year old with a car is probably more dangerous and reckless than 99% of gun owners.
