hope he does better than vouilloz did on his comeback. Thought Palmer was actually sponsored by SantaCruz? was that just for a couple of races and pre-season?

vouilloz was 5th in qualifying in champery, and rode in the rain like everyone else.

I think most ppl get their hopes to high as with Nico's comeback. He won't be training to get into top wc guys form and killing himself but probably just going for a few races for some fun and publicity. Nico did the same. Never stated that his goal was to smash everybody. Also judging a rider by one race is pretty unfair. I'm still stoked for Palmer as he still is one of my childhood heroes and hope he does well.

Yeah, didn't Nico win the megavalanche, or something?

Anyways...welcome back to the sport, Napalm. I always thought he brought some character to the competition, and he was such a naturally good racer. Reminds me of Cedric a little bit. With all-out focus, either could be really dominant, but I think they enjoy it too much to be that focused.

Hopefully he's gunning for some UCI points with the intention of racing the season next year.

Yeah, Palm even says in the video he's not training to beat sam hill, he just wants to have some fun, also mentioned how he's old and slow.. Didn't he try to qualify for the jeep 48 straight last year, but came up short?

I was kinda curious about the bikes thing too. He seems to have an affiliation with Santa Cruz - wasn't it through them that they announced his "possible" return last time? (was it at Interbike?) But my guess is he's not on contract, so maybe he's testing out a few bikes to see which ones he likes best. I would imagine he'll be entering the races as a privateer, so he can choose the bike he wants, correct?

I can't figure out what this smiley is all about, but it cracks me up, so I'm trying to insert it into my posts randomly :yu:

Yeah, i think the problem was that UCI wouldn't let him race WCs because he didn't have any points, and they didn't make an exception for him (even though I'd argue they should have done).

here's what it says right before the video on litter...no need to guess, "...Shaun Palmer tested a Santa Cruz V10 and Evil Revolt to see what suits him best for his return to mountain bike racing at the 2009 U.S. Mountain Bike National Championships in a couple weeks."

First you say you are 'praying' for Palm(wtf? a man in the sky can keep us away from booze and keep us upright on our bikes?), then say he is getting 'paid to train'.

Awesome.

Yeah, SC is a bit hurting on the $ side right now. Doubt they could offer Palmer much.

SC laid off a bunch of people a while back and are now offering the wonderful opportunity of multiple unpaid internships in the company. Gotta love free labor! Rob R is a smart cookie.

But anyway, I hope Palmer puts the crush down on some folks!

Yeah, I'd agree he looks slow. I mean, look how slow he's going through that whoop section :sarcastic::lol:
Wow he can ride through whoops fast. AMAZING.

Am I the only one that isn't excited to see a 40 year old ex pro try and rail it down the course at nationals?

There are many others that will be at that race that be more exciting to watch.

Yep
and
Doubt it.

Seriously though, I am sure that what little crowd there is will be going crazy for the guy..and probably more than a few racers. America loves the under dog; it's only if he does poorly that the e-crowd will try to beat him back into retirement. Personally, I would never count that guy out in ANY sport...he has something that can't be taught.

Fraid so, ya miserable bastard :)
Not miserable it's just that he WAS a great rider. Sure he is still going to have some skill but I would much rather see a younger, more deserving pro class rider on the podium at nationals rather than someone who has already had a successful career in the world cup.

Just give it up and go enjoy riding your bike, you have nothing else to prove.

RUFUS - I gotta disagree with you here.

If a rider has the skill to make it to the podium, then he or she deserves to be there. Whether or not he was on the podium before - be it last year or 10 years ago - a rider's skills earn them the right.

At the same time, If he has no intention of competing for an entire season or series, then I would rather see some new talent working through the ranks.

Palm and Nico racing seems like more of a media stunt to me. I doubt either one of them truly believe they are still fast enough(read: fit enough) to compete with the current top riders.

I agree that anyone fast enough has the right to race, but I would rather see him helping young talent get faster and compete for years to come instead of taking up a spot on the coarse.

I remember reading something about the same dicussion about the older free riders getting into some of the competitions in stead of some young guns. The auther agrued that older ledgens are good for the sport too and I agree.

Being 37 I sure enjoy seeing guys like Peaty, Beneke and Palmer race and do well.

Palmer is AMAZING for the sport, surely? Especially since he has a much broader fan-base, loads of MXers and snowboarders know who he is, so when he gets aboard a DH bike it gets the sport some much-needed attention. IMHO.

One only gets on the course, if one earns it. I thinks its great to have someone who generates so much attention and inspires other people. That is all good for everyone involved.

I bet hes still faster than plenty of pro's - we shall see. No expectation of domination especially after he gave a disclaimer on that one already.

I agree. If he still truly has the passion for DH and he wants the sport to progress, especially for the US, then get into a quality coaching role and help these young, talented riders make it to the top.

I see no reason whatsoever for him to come back other than to make a paycheck off of some advertising campaign. I highly doubt that he will get back to the level where he will be taking home a good chunk of change nor do I think that he wants to put himself through that.

It is a media stunt to sell more product, that is it.
