Paying more and getting a beat up package from UPS is a better deal:confused: I've shipped and receive 1000s of packages from the various carriers - I've only had to file damage or theft claims with UPS.
i guess if i could get in and out of the post office in less than 20 minutes to ship a package i might.....but i have never had a problem with ups/fedex as far as shipping/receiving something.

what i do like about getting packages from the USPS is that it comes before noon. UPS and FedEx usually dont deliver to my house until after 5pm, which can be a huge PITA if i have to sign for something. i see its "out for delivery" at 5am but yet it doesnt get to my house for another 12 hours and their depots are a few minutes away.
the last place i lived where mail was delivered before noon was virginia....about 30 years a go.

usps/ups/fedex rarely if ever shows up around me until after three.

What the heck are you talking about? Please provide evidence.

And at least in my area, the UPS/FedEx folks are fit, unlike my fat mailman who has lost multiple packages since I moved into my place a year ago.

<edit> On a serious note, did you NOT read the article?

In recent weeks, Mr. Donahoe has been pushing a series of painful cost-cutting measures to erase the agency’s deficit, which will reach $9.2 billion this fiscal year. They include eliminating Saturday mail delivery, closing up to 3,700 postal locations and laying off 120,000 workers — nearly one-fifth of the agency’s work force — despite a no-layoffs clause in the unions’ contracts.

At the same time, decades of contractual promises made to unionized workers, including no-layoff clauses, are increasing the post office’s costs. Labor represents 80 percent of the agency’s expenses, compared with 53 percent at United Parcel Service and 32 percent at FedEx, its two biggest private competitors. Postal workers also receive more generous health benefits than most other federal employees.
Not to mention UPS/FedEx employees. A $9.2B deficit, should have gone commercial.

I love flat rate boxes, but I can't ship a bike (at least not one my size) via USPS at all.

Living in a rural area, I use USPS a lot - it's my default for shipping things and I have found the service reliable. New Hampshire does not send me my carry permit by FedEx, they do so by USPS. I would not be happy if they fell victim to the teabaggers.

Every freaking proposal to let business do it better so far with the possible exception of the dissolution of Ma Bell has led to less service at a much steeper cost and many more people unemployed. Fvck corporate "entrepreneurs".

If you lived real rural Ma Bell was great, but that was then.
