I've got an oldish XT crank like this:

am wanting to refurbish the arms, either polish them or have them re-anodised, can I remove the spider from the arm on the drive ?

if not, what's the best way of removing the coating thats on them, looks like anno, without messing up the black spider ?

suggestions ??

cheers.

If the spider is crimped onto the arm you can't remove it.

If it has a lockring and nut on the back you need a shimano tool to get it off. Mine has TL-UN96 on the back. I believe it is the same tool that was used with the old xtr bbs with roller bearings.

Your are right about the tool and the other stuff.

Just make sure to remove the c-clip. I forgot to once and stripped the lockring. Oops. It was my first time.
Clamping the tool in a vise is the easiest way. Better knuckle protection.
