My large chain ring is wearing fast because of all the hits it's been taking, is it possible to replace it with a bash guard so I can stop worrying about wrecking my crankset? If so, any recommendations on a bash guard? I have a Shimano LX M580 crankset.
I put one of the RaceFace bashguards on my XC bike. Works good. Just match the BCD for your crankset. Adjust the limit screw on your FD to keep from shifting past the "middle" ring.
Just make sure you also get a bash that's the right size for your middle chainring. I've seen some guys run a 38 tooth or bigger bash in this situation when they only have a 32t middle ring, and depending on what front derailleur you run, it can make shifting a bit noisy or crummy.
