I am getting into riding road after years of swearing I never would (hey its fun, who new?) and am now on the hunt for a good frame to start on that I won't be wanting to replace in a year or so. So far I have been looking at the Spooky Skeletor (impressive >1000gr frame weight) but I know little about it other than what is mentioned on their web site. I am also considering some form of a Trek but A. few of them are available as frame sets and B. Expensive considering what else is available. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I am specifically looking for a frame because I have a set of Mavic Ksyrium SL wheels and a newer Ultegra grouppo to build it with

I am pretty open to suggestions and only have a few requirements
1. Less than 1800$ for frame fork (Skeletor is 1250$)
2. 1000 grams or less
3. Metal no carbon (except for fork)
4. Prefer new but will go used for the right frame.

Again I am pretty new to this game so I am really just looking for suggestions on what is available/ matches my wants.
Thanks.

The Cannondales and our bikes (Spooky) are not just two of the best frames on the market... period, and two of the best values... They are also the only 2 production aluminum frames that are built in the U.S.

There are lots of really nice asian-built Steel frames in your price range from a myriad of manufacturers... They will tend to have better geometry than "less-expensive" aluminum frames, most of which, these days are aimed at the "comfort" or recreational road market.

I'd stay away from bikes with carbon stays... If you want durability, reliability and crash-proofness, buying a bike that is made compltetely out of metal is a great start.

How's the CAAD9/Spooky compare to a late-model Klein Quantum?

Them's is dirt cheap used...about to build one up with my Campy group, and possibly race in a crit in a couple weeks. SO EXCITED!!!

I am pretty much sold on the Skeletor, amazing bike especially for the price and it looks great as well. I only wish there was a dealer round these parts. What are your requirements for becoming a dealer? I ride DH for a shop that just opened and only has one brand at the moment, I'm sure he can't afford the overhead to bring any other big brands in, but he is interested in bringing smaller 'boutique' brands in. But if I have to order it from you guys no biggie.
-edit- 14 pound road bikes with alu frames!? My head might explode.

I've owned a Klein road bike and mountain bike....they are ridiculously stiff and consequently a rough ride.

You Always need another bike! that goes with out saying.

the N+1 rule you know
Tell me about it. We just got our new CX bikes into stock, and my coworker immediately started in on me about how I needed one...they are pretty damn hot, I will admit. The SS one especially.
Maybe I'll sell the fixie I started building up...anybody want to buy an upgraded Felt Curbside in 58cm? :)

If one were to buy a $300 Cannondale frame on ebay - where would one go to outfit it with a grouppo at a price in line with the price paid for the frame???

If only I was taller...
Shin splints?
Pedal blocks?

I need to have a garage sale soon either way. I bought too many bikes this year...or to word it better, I owe my company more money than I would prefer at the moment.

Felt is making a Stainless CX bike? is that what you meant by SS?

check out GVHbikes.com he usually has some nice deals on framesets. last time i checked he was selling a DeRosa New Primato steel frameset for like $1900 which is a pretty good deal. he carries Viner too and those are usually $1000 and less in either steel or alu. nothing against Spooky, if that's what you like then go for it. just giving out another option. what size are you? i'm selling my steel Wojcik if you need a 59cm.

I'm presently taking wheel donations. Specifically ones with freehubs that start in Camp and end in nolo.

I have a set of brand new Campy Zonda wheels, coincidentally with Vredestein Fortezza SE tires mounted on them. Unfortunately they're not scheduled for donation.

What do I have to do to get sponsored by James@Felt? Carry more trashcans full of beer?

I came across some of those pictures the other day, I was cracking up. "
99 cents for a 6-pack?"
"Um, yeah, I thought it was a great deal too!"

I'd love to be able to hook a brotha up, but honestly I've got to pay off some other bike debt, so I can continue to buy new bikes.

kinda looking for a non-race bike to add to the stable. btw ...picked up some wheels off of a TT bike that have some pretty lil Felt decals on em ;)
Sweet. I'll take a look this weekend hopefully and figure out what's going and what's staying.
TT wheels eh? Tubular or clincher? We do a lot of that stuff, have some pretty neat wheels on one of the AR bikes this year. "This year" meaning 2010 of course.

the Flash Point version of the 404/808....maybe just maybe i wont break these ?
Maybe, maybe not.
You should get the Clydesdale build, or the "super stiff" laminate on your next Zipps then. That might fix it.
Then again, maybe it's you. There are about 90% of the guys here who ride Zipp tubies as their everyday wheels, and I've seen a couple broken ones, but nothing just "failed."

I'm not sure what was more hilarious, the fact that Don was able to pull off the dollar six-pack (with a paper inkjet fake ID, no less) or six dudes, two big garbage cans of beer and ice, and 4-5 bikes rolling from Monterey to Laguna Seca in a 2-door Volkswagen hatchback...

If you ever need to unload Campy wheels cheap, I'm your man! :D

Not to mention talking our way into free parking.

That poor GTI, it suffered so much in such great pursuits.
Trunk racks FTW! I'll try to dig up those photos and post 'em up...
