I use the CrankBrothers Quattro's and love them. They do have the small platform for stability.

Hmmm....yeah, I was looking at the quattro's, but they may be *slightly* out of my price range right now. Thanks Heidi! :)

I just run my Time Atacs on both bikes - I can't afford different pedals or different shoes for different bikes, and I'm no racer on either end (mtb or road) so they get the job done.

I hear ya Mark. I do have a spare set of SPD's that I could throw on for now and use my MTB shoes, but I figured...new bike, new shoes. Might as well jump in with both feet right? :D

Yah, I got them when I was sponsored. I miss those times. :)

Actually, I just found some online for $89. That would work! How is the platform? Any issue with "hot spots"? I plan on doing a few century rides a year so comfort is the priority for me.

I never found the issue of hotspots to be from pedals, but from shoes. I haven't had ANY problem with those pedals and they have THOUSANDS of miles of riding on them.

I rock Look Keo Carbons with the red cleats (11 degrees of float, I think.) I love these pedals, and both of them weigh as much as one of my tires!

Second the KeOs. The reds have 9 degrees of float. I think they're coming with the grey (4.5 degree) cleats now, but my knees prefer most float.
I have the HM Carbons with the steel spindle. No lighter than the standard, just oh so pimp with the exposed weave, and handmade goodness.
The Sprints have all the same features. What I like about the Look design is the larger cleat gives you more contact with the pedal, no hotspots with a smaller cleat. I think there's a reason companies have shied away from the SPD-style cleat on road pedals.

walking in road shoes = :dead:
Solution is simple:

SPD-SL cleats have three rubber-ish contact points, combine that with a show that has a rubber heel tab and you're set.

I've walked on ice with these... try that with Look cleats :blah:

Not to mention that the ultegra/105 pedals can be ridden in sneakers on those rare occassion.

And yes, as a road pedal, they perform well.

Campy Chorus on my Serotta, Durace 7700 spd-r from about 1998 on my Univega Super Poo and Shimano 959 spd on my touring bike. The 959s really are the best all around pedal I have ever used.

I have Speedplay Zero Ti pedals and I really like them. They're stupid light and the easiest pedal I've ever used to click into. They never release unexpectedly, and you can dial in as much or little float as you like. I got the cafe cleat covers, so I can walk around in my road shoes with no problem.

i run crankbrothers egg beaters and i thought id have a problem with no platform but road shoes are so stiff now you hardly need a platform and i believe they are reasonably price

I've been running the Time RXS Carbon's on my roadie since day one, and I love 'em. They're fairly light and have a really crisp, positive feeling engagement. I've also got the CrankBros Quattro's on my mountain bike (oddly) and I've got no complaints there either. Look Keo's would probably round out my top three suggestions. . .

Will they take the std. 2-hole cleat that comes with the pedals, or do I have to order the 3-hole adaptors?
Your Specialized shoes will take the 2 hole cleats that come with the pedals. Remember, there are two allen head, pins that are screwed into the two hole plates. I think they are their to prevent the threads from getting messed up. Don't forget to remove those if you haven't do so already.

I got a set of Keo's and a nice pair of stiff Shimano shoes. love the combination. You said money was an issue but remember a sweet set of pedals coupled with some flexy shoes is still going to suck the big ones.
