Sorry if this has been discussed, but I didn't see this covered.

I want to go with the Saints on the D9 with 2 rings up front. I understand that I need the 83mm bb. I'm not familiar with the new external bbs so please bear with me.

I want to know if I can buy a 68/73 shell crank and change out the bb for the 83mm. I only see the 68/73 shell sizes selling for a good price, and would make the switch if I only have to change out the bb.

nope, you need the 83mm cranks to match the BB. The spindle on the 68/73mm cranks will be too short to work with the 83mm BB.

the bb cups are the same. it's the length of the spindle that changes. I've heard that you can run the standard crank with a single ring with a modification though. You'd have to cut/ grind the small ring mounts for clearance, and flip the shock pivot bolt around.

Argg. That's kind of what I thought. Thanks for the replies, I was hoping I could score some of the sweet deals that have been going online but I guess I'm stuck with having to buy the longer spindle which doesn't seem to sell for less that MSRP.
