It's not that, its just not in my budget. I'll let everyone know when I start my fund raiser for my new shoulders and knees that are fixable, I have lots of "used" parts to auction off.

I seem to remember the first year he did this he said it was because a friend of his, from the Montreal area, had had breast cancer, so he had thought of this as a way of raising funds. Of course I could be mistaken, but I think it came from him, not from the marketing minds of the Monster Energy/Specialized team...

I think it might be some of his sponsors bidding on the bike. Get a nice centerpiece for a lobby and make a (tax write off) donation to a charity. Win-Win.

That is also what i was thinking, you would have to imagine specialized themselves would like to keep it, they do have a collection of historically significant bikes in their home base. As you mentioned, they just write it off at the end of the year anyways
