14 hour days? Cry me a ****in' river. :D

Anyway, my serious suggestions would be to not be a teacher--job cuts are occurring everywhere, as said above--and to instead look at what fields are growing. That'd be nursing, energy exploration, etc. I'm sure there's a list out there somewhere.
Part of me would love to go back to school and focus more on the energy side of things (staying in software to manage alternative energy solutions). But part of me feels this is where this is headed based on my current project, so school might not be needed. As long as this project works. I guess if it fails, I could go to the competition. :D

Any kind of contract work like a graphic designer or a coach (still a bit like a teacher but you teach people less valuable information so they can put into their cv they have some skills a chimp could learn in an hour). Most jobs like this mean long work days and are pretty stressful but you often end up with lots of free time. The problem is you dont always control it and it is hard to synchronize with your friends.

Dirtmag is hiring right now ;)

Well lets see here. First off the teaching idea is completely out if you think you are getting reasonable pay and lots of time off...... As a teacher you get two choices, learn to budget your money for those three plus months your not working, or work all summer long for summer school. That's right, all that time off you don't get paid for.
.
Umm, teachers are salaried. They get a check every 2 weeks just like very other salary position.
If you average out how much they work, they are working less than 2k hours a year and are getting paid better than most. Not a bad gig if you can handle the work. Me, not so much.

At least in Washington they could choose to have their pay spread out throughout the year or take it during the school year with a break from both pay and work over the summer, or so my wife (who taught in Coupeville for several years) tells me.

Here in cali it is like Toshi says.... the have to ask for that, and they are not getting enough.... Sad but true. Teachers get screwed for what they have to put up with, Wish the politicians would pull there collective heads out of their collective ass's and realize what teachers have to deal with these days and pay them what they are worth instead of dishing more and more budget cuts.

BTW, I make more than six of my friends who are teachers, and I my job is a lot easier

Go into IT and then get a job with the city/state/feds. I work for the state and the pay is good, benefits are great, and I get lots of time off. Teaching jobs are hard to come by right now with all of the budget cuts and that won't end anytime soon. Besides, do you really want to baby sit kids for a living??

Both my sister and her husband are teachers. They both like it, but like everyone else has said, 14 hour days and TONS of work and stress. And crappy pay.

They ended up getting hired by a school in Hong Kong and now they are doing great. So perhaps that is something to consider.

The thing with IT is you have to like it or it will kill you. At least if you are a programmer. Tried it and Id rather **** out hedgehogs than repeat that experience.

i think about it....

i couldn't deal with today's kids/preteen/teenagers.

Your teachers were porn-crazed alcoholics, too, just to cope with dealing with the likes of you. You just didn't know it.
