I think what you can afford may limit you options. Housing in Seattle is not cheap.
Is it So Cal expensive?

Seattle has a lot of things going for it...but night life ain't one of them... Bars close early and you can't even touch the strippers......
What!?! How early? Are the strippers hot? Or do thay all have that winter layer of fat? And what do you know of nightlife anyway? You're married!

The wife and I are thinking of heading up there to check it out in a couple of months. She hates it when we can't touch the strippers. ;)

Also, any good (and I mean GOOD!) Irish pubs? Not English pubs. (Dang limeys couldn't run a good pub to save their lives :p )

Did that last summer and we were sold. Just trying to get our act togther here before starting the job hunt and housing sell/buy process.

Haven't cared about nightlife since I hit 30 some years ago. But there were plenty of bars I'd hang out in for a good pint.

BTW, for those of you that ride in the winter, how far do you have to go to get out of the wet? Can you just drive east for an hour and be in dry areas? I know, go snowboard, but still curious about the riding. For reference, we drive for 1-1.5 hours each way to get to decent riding in the NoVA area. It sucks, but what are you gonna do?

The thing about housing in the city is that places that are not over priced (as compared to similar listings on the market anyway) close a few days after they are listed... at least in the Ballard/Greenwood/Freemont/Magnolia neighborhoods...

I've been trying to find an affordable house since last summer... they are taking many of the apartment buildings and turning them into condo conversions...

Seattle housing keeps going up but I'm starting to see more and more price reduced signs... For the time being my $$ are in moderate investments... the stock market has been good lately.

Wow....if that's what you consider "night life" for twentysomethings, you are REALLY REALLY REALLY missing out....

I'm actually not trying to be condescending here. It pales in comparison.
You obviously need to come out with my brother-in-law and I on our pub crawls. We've found the happenin' spots...

And there are good Irish places around now (obviously nothing as good as the country of origin...but what ev)...I think they were waiting until you left.

Then what do you consider night life? Personally, I've got more important things to do than go out every night, but there's plenty of places to go when we do go out. The Ballroom, High Dive and the like in Fremont, good bars in Ballard, plenty of venues downtown, and then theres the Ave and whatever parties are on Greek Row or in Wallingford.

Yeah the night life in Seattle sucks if you dig Rocking out to Bryan Adams and drinking Kokanee, otherwise it's pretty cool if you are into to good music (plethera of shows every night), good beer (can you say micro brew?) , and cool people.

Your work location (and hours) should play a large part in the places you look to live. Heading North or South of the City during rush hour is futile. East side is OK for now, but 520 will eventually need to be replaced.

There are a lot of great places to live in Seattle including a neighborhoods in the City that feel like the suburbs. You will just need to provide more details (work location, price point, rent or buy, etc.) to get solid direction off this site.

...and if you move to Seattle, that avatar will HAVE to go.....
What the hell kind of pretension is that? I was born and raised in this wonderful town and a can of PBR is my post ride drink of choice. Welcome PBR man. There are a ton of great ride areas. Check out BBTC.org , Bonesovermetal.com, and search for Galbraith Mountain to begin with. There is a great ride community here! Peace,

I have done a little research and it is kind of like Santa Fe in housing pricing. but not knowing the area to well I am looking for a burb of Seattle. maybe around a max of 30mins to downtown for drive time.
Hell....It takes longer then 30 minutes to get to downtown, even when you start in downtown.

Sounds like I need to bump up the travel time to 45mins to an hour outside downtown.

Any suggestion on what towns? Renton, Kent, Federal way...so on
Look north at first (I would suggest Bothell...where I live....). Price of housing is cheaper the farther south you go...but then so are the trailers.....

And yes....there are trailer parks in Bothell...so shut the hell up.

But in all seriousness...back to the topic

a little more info would help. Who are you? You have kids? Single? D.I.N.K.s? Looking for a condo? place with a yard? are you a single middle aged gay man?

What are you looking for?
Married soon, house with yard $250.000 and below or rental up to $1600, 32 going on 10, ride alot DH & all mountain.....

edit.....finding a house with a yard under $250k within 30 minutes of DT could be tough.
Thats what I am seeing. I am able to go about anywhere so 30mins of DT can increase to about an hour from what I am learning. I just kind of want to be no more than an hour from DT.

I hope the pay scale reflects the cost of living. I have not talked to anyone yet so I am crossing my fingers.

And this is just my opinion but you might want to land a job first so you know where you'd be working. you buy a house in say...renton and you end up working...in Marysville or something, that won't be a lot of fun....

Of course! Just started talking about this move.

What industry are you in?
Industry is bikes.

If you have kids, stay away from Marysville, Lake Stevens, Granite Falls, etc. I'm from Renton originally which has more problems than almost anywhere else in the state (except maybe Yakima or SoTacoma), and have learned a lot of things I wish I never knew about the deviant culture in our area. We had a lot of problems with meth, crack, etc in my high school and the surrounding areas, but it was nothing a barrier of good parenting couldn't overcome. Any kid with some support at home saw past the glass. Unfortunately, these areas seem to have a way about them when it comes to attracting good kids to bad habits.

I think it comes down to what is revered in the area. In the south end - King county, pierce, etc there is a big enough population of kids with families struggling to get ahead that it puts everything into perspective. Kids from Snohomish seem to not have that. I have seen a lot of good kids from solid families fall into a lifestyle of heavy glass use. I know it seems like a gross generalization, but I think it's something in the water. Every state has its problems - and washington loves ice more than most people would ever want to know.

Other than that? There is a ton of great riding anywhere you go as long as it's Mt Vernon, Bellingham or the Seattle area.

I bought in Bothell back in '01. Smallest house on the block (1000 sq ft). Under 200,000...but not by much. Now the trend is to tear down all the houses that were built in the 70's and early 80's and put up ones that are 750,000 and up. We have 3 developments going up within 5 blocks of our place where no home is less than 2,500 sq ft and no less than 750,000. AND they're almost all sold!!!! If you're into biking into work, Bothell and Kenmore areas are teh tits (you get your workout and miss the traffic!!) IF you can find a fixer upper before the development companies buy them up....

I have to chime in and suggest the issaquah, preston, snoqualmie valley area. You don't move to that area for the night life though, just for the beautiful surroundings and proximity to good riding.
