Anyone have a good shuttle rig? Maybe an old truck that has been modified specifically with the intent of being a shuttle rig and not just a lifted Tacoma with a tailgate pad?

I’ve got a ‘88 Chevrolet Silverado k1500 4x4 with an extended cab and a 8’ bed as a secondary vehicle I’m looking for inspiration for.

This is a downhill forum and it seems like a lot of US ‘muricans won’t be doing any bike parks this summer.

I once ran shuttles with some dudes in Tahoe... Econoline can with a flat bed trailer. I believe they had attached tray racks onto the flatbed for security. Was quite a setup.

North shore type rack seems to be the way to go, perhaps? That was you can put all the stinky gear (and people, if needed) in the bed of the truck. More room for activities etc.

A local has a Yukon XL (Could be a Tahoe I guess, can't remember) with a 6 bike North Shore and two trays on the roof.

I mean with the 8ft bed a tailgate pad is the way to go. North shore is cool for suvs and short beds, but with a long bed meh...

Would be rad if you could build a quick through the front triangle lock bar for it though.

Padded hardened steel chain would be better for that I think. More flexibility for all the different shapes and sizes of bikes.

Best shuttle rig I have ridden in was a late 80s suburban. Lifted on 35's and had air bags. 3 bench seats holds 9 good with a 10th squeezed in for the drive down. They had built an expanded metal platform on the roof with a ladder off the back. They had a box of tie downs and would throw 9 bikes up there and tie them down moto style by the bars. That monster was a rolling party up the mountain.

Ha!
Thanks for al the good feedback thus far and sorry I didn’t see that old thread.

I am more thinking about doing a flatbed conversion with some sort of bike hooks or something to get a good load of people up the mountain.

currently I can get 6-7 bikes on my tailgate pretty easy and have a 5 bike recon rack for an additional party. I’ve got bench seats for both my back and front seats so can get a cozy 6-7 people up front and an additional 3-4 on my tool box and hanging out in the bed.
Alternatively thinking of installing a ladder/lumber rack and building some wooden benches along the sides of the bed where the bikes won’t need to be for people to sit on and have somewhere to shove their stuff underneath (as well as all the needed beer). In the winter, if it’s tall enough, this would allow me to also grab some canvas to hang over the lumber rack and keep people out of the freezing rain/winter air (I live in the PNW).

This was our shuttle rig when we were in Ecuador:

This doesn't look like the usual crowd, lack of full-face helmets and body armor..

Kind of wonder if we will ever see a shuttle-bus again in this new wonderful world.

Even though it has been a while, I think I would miss the banter, chirping, camaraderie, but not the odour, never the odour.

I never remember the odor...until I get back on a shuttle.

Self driving cars need to hurry up.
