What are my options for a road bike with options to run singlespeed (without tensioner) or a derailleur?

Custom with sliding drops? EBB? (How well do EBBs work in the road world?)

Are there any production models besides the Surly Cross-Check? I'd prefer a real road bike and not a 'crosser, but the geometry on the crosscheck seems to compare reasonably favorably with some other non-super-racy road bikes at a quick Google-glance...

Intent is fitness/commuting, not racing or club riding or anything, but I still don't want a pig of a bike to do it on.


I may just put skinny slicks on my rigid XC bike, but am just musing here.

Check out the Pake Bikes. I have a C'mute, but it is a cross setup, but could be used for both. Pretty reasonably priced...

Well, like I said, I know I can get whatever I want custom-made. The question was are there any off-the-shelfs that fit the bill? Regardless of cost; just wanted to see what the options were.

I kinda need the rest of the bike before the bottle opener on the fork end becomes a deciding factor...
