I am looking for a nice mountain town to spend a week in either at the end of this month or next month. My main thing is I don't want to have to rent a car.

I am thinking about catching the train to Fraser, CO & staying at the hostel & riding the free bus to the mountain.

How is SLC? Can you fly-in & rely on public transportation to get to the ski hills?

Breckenridge. Fly to Denver, take the Colorado Mountain Express to town. Walk around town as necessary, or use the summit county shuttle to get to other resorts in the area.

Summit County is decent. But do yourself a favor and find lodging in Frisco - it'll be cheaper and you'll be centrally postitioned to go to Copper, Breck, Keystone, and A-Basin.

Or head to Aspen. Pricey... but hands-down the winner when it comes to the skiing - with the options of Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, and Snowmass.

Steamboat's public transportation is pretty damned good.

Or if you want the REAL win fly to Gunnison, take the Alpine Shuttle ($1?) to Crested Butte, stay in the hostel there and enjoy the stellar snow.

SLC has good transit up the Cottonwood Canyons, I think - you might PM Heisenberg for more details.

Oh - and there's nothing at all wrong with Fraser/Winter Park. That's easy public transit and the mountain kicks a$$.

Cheap train tickets into town. Free ski bus up the hill. Very hitch hiker friendly going up or down.

Mt Baker is also good if you can find a room for rent in Glacier. It's very dark and rainy, but the snow is massive and the vibe is pleasant.

All excellent options. I don't particularly care for the skiing at Breckenridge, I just like the town.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: I'd really suggest taking a cab from the airport to wherever you're staying in town, then relying on transit. There's no rail line out to the airport (not done until 2012), but the one that runs the length of the valley from downtown SLC (where most decent hotels are) has stops with transfer points onto the canyon ski bus lines (which kick ass, btw).

Park City has a very good bus system that caters nearly exclusively to carting around tourists in the winter, but I'd really suggest you stay in SLC if you're here for the skiing and not Bogner-watching.

Many hotels run free shuttles from the airport to downtown as well - there are bus routes, but I can't speak to their timeliness/ski accommodations.

When are you looking to go?

FYI steamboat has their own airport. I flew there for like $250 RT in 2009.
I did the tour of CB / SB and Denver in 7 days last Feb. 2 days at each mt. It was sick. I would hit up steamboat. but it depends on what you like to ride.

steamboat. the bus brings you right to the lift. Lots of fun great terrain. It dumped when I was there, so sick. Did a couple easy out and back lead by old buddy of mine. Commercialized town was nice to have for necessities like mcdonalds and the what not mm shop.

crested butte has the same deal with the bus but is way gnarlier of a mountain much steeper, with more rocks. Felt like going to Platty for the first time. I had never been challenged on a snowboard like that before . CB also has the sick bike riding in the summer.
its was also far less commercialized. but they do trivia ( Ipod speakers / projector) = drunk jeopardy at a bar for $$$ and that is fun. there was also good sushi believe it or not.

Maryland, east coast.
I second Breckenridge. But I'd also mention Park City, Utah. Both small towns, all kinds of stores, bars, and restaurants all in a quaint small town setting, no car needed to go anywhere. Walking distance from everything, town and slopes. How you get to the airport? Don't know? I had friend in CO pick me up. Utah we took a limo. Well, it was a van. No, it was not down by the river.

Steamboat springs. Fly into the local airport (not steamboat, can't remember the name). You can stay right in town or at the mountain, and there is a free bus all over town.

Breck sucks.

SLC Cottowoods in accessible by bus sometimes the only way on powder days. The light rail makes low cost lodging available from the airport. As awesome as skiing in SLC it sounds like a good deal to me.

another vote for Whitefish, MT. i just spent the last week and a half in Columbia Falls, MT (about 25-35min away) at a friends house and we hitch hiked to the mtn everyday without any problems, plus Big Mtn has some amazing tree riding.

thanks for all the info yall.

I am strongly leaning towards hopping on the train here & riding it to WP where I have cheap lodging, a badass mountain that I sorta know my way around & free transportation.

Let me know if you do... I *might* be able to get you discount lift tickets... if you don't already have a line.

+1 for Frisco, CO and going to all the areas around there.

SLC is also nice, the best skiing I ever did was at Alta and Snowbird.

SLC for the win. Shuttle straight into Park City and you never need a car to get to any of the 3 hills. No need to walk with all the shuttles but the town's got a great walking layout.

Jackson Hole (proper) is crazy cheap (motel/hotel) and no car needed. $6 r/t to the slopes.
heavenly tahoe - $40r/t airport. stay at one of the Casino’s, I like Harvey's, it's 2 blocks from the Gondola and all shopping/food/entertainment.

OBviously a man who knows his skiing! Best skiing I've EVER done in my life. Snowbird RULES! Their bowls are AWESOME. And Alta's shutes are off the wall.

Steamboat = turd burglar friendly.

I was told once the hardest thing about skiing Tahoe if you stay at the casinos is trying to ski with a gut full of buffet food and liquor.
