Im trying to find a decent steel hardtail and while I dream about riding a soulcraft/sycip/IF i am in college and thats just not gonna happen anytime soon (unless someone has a large one of these and wants to sell it to me hehe) i digress....

I stumble across soma fabrications:

http://www.somafab.com

they use r. 631 for the front and cro-mo for the rear...not as elegant as 853 but in my financial position they look decent. however I cant find any reviews beyond what is on their website. has anyone here seen one of these up close or know of any other frame builders in the 500-700 range (it doesnt have to be steel, the dean scout is almost in my price range...) any suggestions?

Gunnar might also be a good bike to check out. an 853 front end, and i think a 631 rear end with a few stock color choices, custom color choices, custom geometry available. all for under $1000.
