it is so funny, EVERY forum that i frequent has a thread about this song. It is a horrible song, even for a pop song. and it will now be stuck in my head all day even though i haven't heard any of it today.

Message is good, but it won't make dent. i dig pink. she could kick my ass.

I've seen the video twice today, and can't tell you how the song starts or ends or the melody or whatever.... guess I'm the lucky one.

I have never liked Pink until now. Kinda funny. I always thought she was too pop.
Maybe some lil teeny bopper will think about it the song and it could make an impact.....

maybe

haha.. i just love that it makes fun of the stupid chicks that people seem to bow down to.

i also like that it basically asks the question: where have all the strong women gone? it seems they've traded in they're smarts for push up bras.....

You're insinuating that there was once a large population of strong women.

Is Pink smart or strong because she makes fun of people who aren't like her? Pink's smart?

there have been populations of strong women, they just haven't been given the credit... i'm not a feminist or anything, but from what i've seen lately a lot of girls are only concerned with having the reputation of being "hot" instead of talented, or intelligent... you can be both good-looking and kick ass, but because of all the media coverage on hollywood's sex symbols, it's unfortunately not something you see everyday.

and i never said pink is smart, heck, i dont know her... but i do think that the message she is expressing in the song is an intelligent point to make.

jeeze... in a nutshell, i like the song's lyrics

I think the Kote thread is a great example why.

http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146720

When a girl is signed to a new team, it's not her racing records that the guys are concerned with. It's whether or not they would "hit that".
It's sad but true, but for what it's worth, lots of the guys are annoyed with stupid and sexist comments too, and most of us try to stay out of this forum...on that note, ok I am leaving now... :)

It is funny. It may seem catty to laugh about it, but I think this is a reaction to the pressure we feel as women to be 'beautiful' all the gddmn time, and Pink is trying to knock the pedestals out from under the 'role models'.

It seems that their priorities are all out of whack, but TV land elevates them.I tend to think that our mainstream culture is focusing on the wrong things.

Paris Hilton is a great example. She's famous because she's famous.

Seriously, what does she do?

It's like a modern day freak show.....

People are concerned about Lohan being stick thin, Katie being pregnant, Angelina fcking Brad, Anna Nicole going to the Supreme Court (that's hilarious)........... We're more concerned with this stuff than we are with real world problems.

I don't think that a large population of smart, strong, women got wiped out by a meteor.......

I think that there's plenty of smart, strong, women who don't get any attention because they aren't wearing acrylic heels, porn makeup, and sporting fake breasts and tans. And, maybe it's not their goal in life to become the cover girl on magazines, but just because it's not their goal to seek fame and fortune, but instead work on causes they deem socially responsible, doesn't mean that we can't seek them out instead of worshiping the first bobbleheaded woman that we see.

When is the last time you heard a teenage girl name off her role models and name Maya Angelou, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Amy Vedder, Marla Streb (ok, maybe not good to ask on a biking forum), Ani DiFranco, Cynthia Brazeal.... ?

When I think of Pink, I don't think Mensa material, but I do appreciate the general message... and am happy that somebody put it out there.

I think that she's pointing out the absurdity of making these specific people role models. Yeah, it's going to seem catty. She's pointing out that the emperor has no clothes. There is no substance behind the lot of celebrities that we're drooling over and she's roasting.

And I bet she's making some bank off this song...

Props to Pink. I don't want to be a stupid girl either. Nor do I want any of the young girls and boys out there to have to deal with the de-sensitising reprecussions of the rampant increase and extremety of porn today (ie: Paris Hilton's existence in the media, Jenna Jamison in Marzocchi ads, the KHS ads, the millions of pop-ups leading to gnarly hard-core "sex" sites, etc).

Thanks for posting this MudGrrl, I would likely have never have seen it otherwise.

Props also to the fella's who don't engage in objectifying talk. I know quite a few out there that take a beating from guys who think you've betrayed your gender by not assessing a woman's worth based on whether or not you'd "hit it".

Ont he surface the video has a good message but Pink is still an attractive woman slithering around in a video half naked. Still selling mediocre music with sex. It seems to me she is just bashing Image A in favor of Image B. Although I would say her take is the lesser of two evils. I think if the point of the video was to make a point it could have been done with just the scenes where she was fully clothed and mocking the Paris Hilton types.

I also thought about that.

There are shots of her as 'president', fully clothed and giving a speech, but they definitely do not dominate the video.

I was wondering if the people that she is supposedly trying to get to can only be reached in this way.....

kind of like.... Look over here! There's bootie over here! HA HA HA! We got you!!! We have a message and you're listening to it!

Kind of like the naked PETA chicks (I would rather go naked than wear fur).

Making unattractive or nerdy kids feel good about themselves is a good thing, but also a simple recipe for big record sales.

Well you can argue she's working the industry and manipulating her videos in a way that will get the message out to as many people as possible, using her position to make an impact, etc.

Or you can say that would be giving her too much credit and she's just a hypocrit talking out of both sides of her mouth and willing to do whatever it takes to get paid.

the number of girls riding is low because our society trains us to be careful and safe and the most dangerous thing we are allowed to do is go to target by ourselves.

seriously.

when I tell other people that I ride, they react as though it is incredibly dangerous. my ex's mom thought I was Evil friggin Knievel.

And... I don't even downhill.

I don't really think that the number of girls riding is very low...in fact, I'd bet that it's much higher than ever. But, the number of women RACING is super low (and getting lower)...

WHY? We are treated like second class citizens (ok, so maybe it's nothing new) at most of the races. We get hardly any recognition (except amongst ourselves), especially in the media. Look at all the dh racing vids out there...of course, most women only show up in the "extras" and it's usually footage of them standing on the podium. Earthed 3 had nice (but super short) segments of Rachel Atherton and Tracey Moseley, but they were in the extras. Mountain Bike Action's website posts results from the local Fontana (CA) races, but I've never seen a picture of a girl show up amongst all the pics of the guys.

Here's another one for you...I recently got a flyer in the mail for a certain mountain bike series. To my surprise (and delight) there was a full page ad for a women's mountain biking weekend. And, there was a huge picture of a girl on the ad...or so I thought until I looked closer. It was a picture of a GUY!!!!! His name was on his bike...COME ON!!! A women's event is advertised with a pic of a guy on it?!?

When we do get recognition, like Kote did (by someone who was trying to be genuine), people have to go and make it something negative by reducing her to nothing but a set of boobs on a bike. I've had all sorts of reactions to my downhilling, from looks of confusion to looks of disgust to people asking if I am a lesbian...why...just because I ride my bike down a hill? Come on!!! It just goes to show that unfortunately, a lot of people in this world (and on these message boards) are uneducated and uncultured. I think a lot of you girls have made great arguments and I applaud you for speaking up!!

And for all the guys who say that women's racing isn't as "exciting" as men's racing...it's just an excuse to not give credit where credit is due. This is going to sound snide (purposely) but most of these guys are the same guys who have the g/f's with the big fake boobs, acrylic nails and prissy attitudes who would never go anywhere near a bike. Bottom line...many guys are intimidated by strong women, whether they want to admit it or not.

So, maybe I've ruffled a couple feathers with this post...I hope that might be the case, especially among the male section of the population. It's time we start recognizing and respecting women. And women, respect yourselves for crissakes...we are strong and intelligent. Maybe then, the numbers of women racers will increase to what it used to be and I can stop racing myself!

LOL! Evil friggin Knievel...I love it!!! I get the same response at school from my kids and co-workers. I have a few biking photos up and they are all amazed and think I must be crazy (and yes, I am). I am hoping to instill a sense of confidence in my daughter and help her to break out of the "cookie-cutter" gender roles that society provides I truly look forward to the day when I can take her out riding or throw around a football and hope that she'll be out there rippin' up the trails and, more importantly, having fun for many years.

Example... Women's Final Four.
So much attention was paid to the men's basketball that I didn't hear much about the women's teams.

huh?? women dont race because there are hardly any females in DH videos, and being a guy is on the race flyer?? If a female rides why would either make her decide not to race?

Most of the races I go to, the females get more applause/praise from the spectators, and from everyone at the podium. Also the announcers always make several comments about talking your SO, sister, daughter etc into doing the next race.

I have to agree with doug on part this. While underrepresented in cycling media, I get fantastic support from folks at races. (still don't get a cash prize though).

Thats the point really though isn't it. The complaint isn't about support from individuals but support from the institution. There is a major lack of support from the industry. Yeah people are happy to see girls ride, but we don't get the coverage males do, the financial compensation males do and the media props for being a good rider like males do. Female riders are stilled viewed as novelty. Oh how cute she can rip on a bike.

well apparently the ubiquitous 'they' have fixed it in adventure racing, at least the series i'm in anyways, as the best prizes are in the coed category vs the single sex ones.

i think the message she has in the song is good, perhaps it could've been arrived at a bit differently, however, at least it is an ATTEMPT at something socially redeemable, compared to the standard fare that that genre typically produces.

Doug, I think you missed my point. No, females not racing is NOT caused by lack of women in DH videos...it is simply an example of the lack of support we get from the industry.

Maybe things are different on the East Coast or in certain niches of the sport, but as far as gravity events are concerned, women don't get very much support. If there is support from sponsors or spectators, it is usually spotty and hard to predict (and usually the races women are getting big cash prizes at are smaller races...certainly not the top series...NORBA etc). Or, you have to be packaged together as a "team" with guys in order to reap the benefits of their sponsorship.

I participated in almost two dozen races on the West coast last year (and one in W.Virginia), and have done 6 so far this year...and I can tell you from personal experience, the state of women's (gravity) racing is not all that you would think it is.

I raced 3 years at Plattekill, only missed 2 races.
The only support I received was from myself...no sponsors, no team, nada.

I had my share of not so good races, but I did work hard and finally got a win or 2, and ended up winning the series(in sport)
Was there any teams or sponsors even looking my way??
Not a single one

But almost all women, beg to pro, last or first...were on teams/had sponsors
