Tell me about Challenge tires

At the beginning of the year I bought some Dugast Typhoon tires for the dry conditions and I have to say I was a bit disappointed...the tires are nice, but I don't think they are tough enough for the dry races around here. Are Challenge tires better? The Grifo has a similar tread pattern. Has anyone ridden the Grifo semi-slick? Anyone have time on the Fango? Did it perform well in the mud?

The semi-slick might be a good call for smoother/dryer races. Kind of hard to be swapping tires between wheels though, have to be on a dedicated set of wheels, but you knew that of course.
Fango is pretty new, there might be some guys over on Road Bike Review's CX forum with experience on it, the season is in full swing...

No, I knew you knew. What's the third wheelset? You're turning into a major bike/parts whore!

I started building my new CX tonight...

Bontrager Race X Lite, I grabbed em used off ebay. I ended up wrecking a 303 carbon rim, so I figured I would buy a set of aluminum rimmed wheels for the dry races and leave my carbon wheels for the muddy conditions.

Ouch, that sucks! Guess you learned though eh? The hard way.

For dryer conditions the Tufo Flexus is supposed to be pretty good, tough tread, it won't get torn up, maybe look at a set of those?

Thanks, I'll check em out. I have two sets of the Tufo clincher tubular tires and I've always liked them

Dugasts are a more supple casing, the Challenge will take a heap of abuse. I've run both the white file tread on super dry days this year and the Fango on wet stuff. It is pretty darn close to the Rhino in the slop. I don't even think about the Challenge tires getting wasted vs the Dugast.

Opted to go alu wheels too. Built up one set new and picked up a couple others with the same rim (Velocity Escape). All manner of hubs in em but lets me swap wheels easily. Also kept the overall $$$ into things less than one set of uber hot carbon hoops.

Good to know, I was thinking about picking up a set of 28 Fangos for the really bad mud days. How did you like the white file tread? Did you have any trouble hooking up? I'm concerned I might not be able to corner as well on a semi-slick tire
