Tires

I need new road tires (so does IAB).

So recommend some good ones - maybe something on sale online.

My last tires were Hutchinson excels that sucked. I had an older model (kevlar) tires that I loved but these last ones were crap.

Thanks.

edit: oh yeah, usage - the roads here are in pretty decent shape. I just ride to help my MTB legs - and the MS Bike Tour in June - 50 miles or maybe more.

I've got those - I like them, and they've been pretty flat-resistant, too. They let you run higher pressure, too (I run 140), and it doesn't seem to ride any different than the Bontragers I had before. (2 flats in 80 miles).

Do a search, n00b. :D

I liked some Fortezza Pro Tri comps. I am having decent luck with Bontis right now.

Yeah yeah - but this thread is about ME!

I saw those Michelin Carbon's - they have 05s on sale right now at Performance.
I have a friend that tried those, but they wore really quickly and were pretty hard if I recall. I'll see if anything tickles my fancy at performance real quick.

LOL!

Assume $35 per tires is my limit.

Vredesteins are the bomb! I have some white/black TriComps on my rig, and I love them.

during texas4000, a rider bought those. he was fairly new to road riding and was quite shocked when he learned that he dropped $80 on 1 tire. of course, he didn't realize this until a couple weeks had passed and he needed new tire. a couple of us convinced him that the tire was faster, and he would average a good 5mph high throughout the days. 2 days later he was pissed because the new tire was being cut to hell. good times.

Really? I've had good luck with them. Got 3000 miles out of one as a rear.

I have begun to think that tires are a crap shoot.

What's the difference between the fortezza and the SE?

the SEs are $22.97 at performance! (reg $49.99)
That's what I put on my bike just a couple months ago. I haven't gotten much mileage in on them yet, but they seem pretty nice except that they are fugly blue. :oink: But for $23 I can put up with the color. They ride nicer than what I had on there before, but those were some cheap conti POJ tires.

I run slime in my mountain tubes, and it works great! - All the tubes in my garage are road - and most are casualties of bad installs. (I've learned now, though.)

Mine too. I just patched up a Bunch, so I should be ready for the Upcoming season. It gets kind of scary when some of them have 4 and 5 patches on them. I tried the latex tubes once , oh that was a terrible experience. never again. I 'm thinking about giving tufo's a try

I thought I wanted a 23 (riding now) but I might go back to 25 (came stock on my OCR).

i like the maxxis detonator. I get 2 to 3,000 miles out of them depending on the condition of the road and what I pick up. I try to watch my road tires very closely for wear and tear.

BTW, I have to give big props to Specialized Armadillo Elites. At 260 grams, it is not too porky, and their flat resistance is tops.

They ride pretty well, but considering I ride plenty thru industrial areas and crappy neighborhoods, they are doing a super job protecting from flats.

I've been running Conti Ultra 3000's in the 23 width and am real happy with them. Now that Conti has come out with the 4000 model, you might find some deals on the 3000's, particularly if you buy a pair.

Regarding width, the folks at my local shop have been recommending the wider ones (25, 28) for all around training tires and bad roads. I see the tire surfinguru mentioned comes in a 25, and weighs no more than my Contis...

Fortezzas are the best out there in my experience!

I've had mixed luck with conti. One pair of GP3000s I had would flat every 20-30 miles or more. Changed tubes, strips, checked it every time...tires just had something wrong (changed the tires and problem went away). I do have a pair of 3000s right now that are working fine, but don't seem to last too long.

Heads up on the Tufo (clincher tubeless). I bought a pair of the C Elite Road (700x23) last Aug. intended for some Open Pros and/or DT 1.1Rs. I haven't been able to get them mounted to date! They're an absolute NIGHTMARE to get on a rim, let alone seat the bead. Plus, they're pretty heavy!

They're in the house - but I need 2 weeks and 5 days before I can road ride again.

How do you pronounce them?
Vredstein: vuh-red-styne. The "vuh" part is quick.

Ok, I'll ask you in two weeks and 6 days then.
