I'm not surprised. I dabbled in fMRI research in the past but never got too into it (largely since my subspecialty, body imaging, doesn't use it). I did note some years back that there are a lot of early studies that used totally inappropriate statistical tests. (Specifically: they did not correct for multiple comparisons, and there are a metric shit-ton of comparisons involved when analyzing fMRI data.)
