I hope the driver goes to jail for a long long time. I can't imagine what that fellow is going through. :(

WOW  That story gave me chills. Thats why I think riding the road is far more dangerous than any drop/gap ever done. You just never know what idiot is coming down the road in front or behind you.

I give my support and best wishes to the family of the fallin rider.

Colorado cyclist killed

Scott Kornfield, a 28 year-old cyclist from Thornton, CO, USA, was killed on May 30 after being hit head on by a teenager driving a Ford Explorer. According to local Colorado news sources, the 17 year-old driver Chandler Thorpe had apparently fallen asleep at the wheel, and drifted into the northbound lane of U.S. 36, where Kornfield was riding with his friend Nate Llerandi. The SUV continued veering towards the cyclists, and only Llerandi was able to avoid it, escaping injury. Unfortunately, Kornfield went straight over the top and was killed instantly. The vehicle eventually stopped when it drove into an embankment on the eastern side of the road. The driver also escaped injury.

Friend Ben Pryhoda wrote to Cyclingnews, "Scott Kornfield was a Cat. 3 racer on the road. Prior to taking up road racing in Colorado he was an accomplished semi-pro mountain biker in the New England area. He loved to go uphill and Boulder gave him a lot of opportunities to do just that. Riding with Scott made all of us faster."

Absolutely terrible, I also hope the driver goes to jail for a long time. I came very close to getting hit once also, but I was simply walking on the side of the road. If I ever see an erratic driver when I am riding on the road, I will actually stop and get as far off the road as possible.

He won't because he is a minor and will get off because for some reason it was not his fault, or will be ruled out as "just an accident". You watch. Has anyone heard the outcome of the lady killed in utah a few months ago. Same kind of deal, and the last I heard the driver was playing the victim.

I just found out about this this afternoon. :( I was on my way home from work, and happend to see one of the guys from the shop I used to work at. He asked me if I had heard about Scotty. He then proceeded to tell me what had happened. I never met Scott as he came to work for the shop a few months after I moved to ND, but from what I was told, he was a great guy and anyone who met him should consider themselves extremely lucky. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.

How eronic. This thread pops up and freaks me out all day. Then, just a few minutes ago I get an "all office" email saying that one of our employees was hit by a care during his lunch ride. Apparently he is in critical but stable condition. Broke both legs and several vertibra. He's not paralized so thats good. He was coming down a hill and a car pulled out and hit him. Thats all I know, but luckly it's not a fatality. I will never not wear a helmet again.
