What about 2 x 9?

Though my own stupidity/lack of exp I converted by bike to a 1 x 7. (I screwed with the set screws and mounting point of my derailleurs and until I re tune it only runs my 34 t up front and 2 - 8 in the back) I rode like this and didn't really mind the set up I was able to get satisfactory down hill/flat speed in my high gears and pretty good climbing in my low gear. I do a lot of climbing though with a VERY heavy bike 35 lbs or so. I don't think I'm ready to give up my granny gear yet (smallest front chain ring)

I was wondering if anyone runs 2 chain rings up front and 9 cassette in the back?
I'd like to hear how you avoid dumping your chain by shifting too far up with your front DR and also how satisfied you felt on downs and ups.

I'd dump my big ring in front in favor of a bash guard

Most people who do this don't stick with the 22,32 rings. 26,36 or 38 is much more common as this provides most of the gearing you'll need when paired with an 11-34 cassette. Combine this with an E13 DRS chainguild. Front dérailleur upper limit screw is used to prevent shifting into the bashgaurd.

What if I want to stick with an 11-32 rear cassette? I'm still learning about gearing but 11-32 rear seems to be the most common setup

I run a 32 up front and a 11-34 in back. I almost never use my 22 granny but its nice to have just in case. If I ever go 1x9 it be the same but without the granny.

I run 24/36/bash with a 11-34 cassette. I like the gearing a lot better than the 22/32 and 11-34 that I was running before. To keep from over shifting you tighten the "H"(high) limit screw in so that it stops before going past your "middle" ring.

Then you probably won't want a 26T granny ring. You'll need to stick to a 24T and for a low enough 1st and this reduces the usability of the granny on gradual climbs or techy flats. It also means there would be a bigger a jump if you ran a 36T big ring so you're limiting yourself to 34 which limits your speed on fast flats and downhills.
All this compromise in total gear spread isn't worth it (in most people's eyes) for the slightly tighter ratios of an 11-32 over 11-34. From what I've seen 11-34 is the more common cassette on 2 ring bikes.

I am running 22-36 up front and 11-34 in back. I had been running 1x9 with the 36 in the front and the same cassette, but I was real out of shape for climbing so i put the granny gear on. Once I'm back in better shape I'm gonna drop the granny gear (so a 36 with a 11-34 gives me a good range still). I really hope that e.13 releases this, but if not I will put on an LG-1.

You think you can't get rid of your granny, but once you do its not really missed. I run a 1x9 32t in front and 11-32 in the back on my 33 lb AM bike. your legs just learn to pedal harder up hills to keep your speed up.

Yeah, but you're stuck with a top gear of 32-11. Can't go very fast with that.
Besides, how well you can climb with a 32-32 depends on where you live. NO ONE could ride that up to the top of many mountain pass descents in Summit county. I get worked with my 26-34.

Been running a 22/32 front and 11-34T rear 2x9 with basher all year, pretty happy with it on my technical/hilly trails (where afterburners aren't much use). See above for the limit screw on the front mech. It's also nice if you run a 2 spd front mech (like mine),less hassle with setup, and no danger of over-shifting :D

It all depends on where you ride. Your from CO, which is huge climbs and then really fast downhills. I trail ride in CT, and a 32-32 is fine except for the steepest climbs. If you can outpedal a 32-11 where I ride, then thats pretty good. It all depends on where you ride.

I run 22/36 with an 11-32 cassette. I'm happy with it for now but there will be some small changes if/when the granny gear needs replaced. With the large span between the 22 and 36 tooth shifting in the front is iffy. Some days I shifts perfectly all day long and I have absolutely no problems. Other days, it will drop the chain when I shift from granny up the the 36 nearly every time I try to shift it. So once I need to change a ring I'm going to shift the 22 up to a 24.
I'm also on the market for a new cassette right now and I'm planning on getting a 11-34. If 36/34 feels good, I might just get rid of the granny all together but the steep climbs I have around here make that sort of a pipe dream.

I ran 22/36 with an 11-34t cassette out back this year. I used the granny gear maybe 5 times, and rarely drop below an 18t cog in the back. For this upcoming year I'm going with a 33t front ring, and a 5 speed cassette in the rear that'll be an 18-34t. For where I ride my AM bike I should never need more than that.

Hi,

I am new here, so Hello every on,

I find some thing interesting will looking for a 2X9 conversion,

http://www.blackspire.com/qs/product/83/5948/263225/0/0/1

They offer granny gear in 28t, and big ring in 42t. It damn close to my favorite set up. match with a 11-32 our 11-34. You get all you need for 100$ (2 chain ring)

What do you think of this idea?
Not sure it would work, you would need to mount the outer ring in the middle, which would probably hit the chainstay.
