I had a '99 Dakota and it was reliable. My buddy Tim's Dakota has 250X miles and its been issue free. Once my wheels sell i'll get a bit more serious about it.
Mine needed a new rear end, transfer case, rebuilt front end and front hubs before 100k.
But I made the mistake of thinking I could work it like a truck.
I quite like the 99-00 Dakota 4.8 with the flares and 4 doors. SLT 4x4 model.
Mine I drove for a little over a year, bought with 110K. No services required at all. Sold with 160K. I was living in south OC and dating a girl in Van Nuys at the time so I spend alot of highway time in it. Thats been my only truck and aside from it being thirsty it was great.
You could always get a bay window camper if you want a project car AND something to take camping. ;0)
I actually joined the ranks of the air cooled vw's just about a year ago now. Been working on it. Got some wheels a few months ago, lowered it almost 9 inches. Doing lots of little things to it. It's a fun little thing. Wanted one for about 15 years.
