UPDATE 4-Armed man breaches barrier, captured in US Capitol

WASHINGTON, Sept 18 (Reuters) - An armed man crashed his vehicle into a barrier outside the U.S. Capitol on Monday and raced into the heavily secured building before being captured in a basement room storing flags.

No one was injured in the 8 a.m. breach, which shut the building down for half an hour and prompted authorities to re-examine security measures for the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate.

"This guy shouldn't have been able to get into the Capitol. The fact that he did is unacceptable," said a law enforcement official, requesting anonymity. "We need a step-by-step review of what happened and take corrective action."

The man, described by the official as apparently unstable, was carrying a small handgun in his pocket.

"He apparently thought the devil or the demons were chasing him," the official said.

Capitol Police were expected to issue a statement about the incident following its own review, which authorities said would include an examination of security camera videotape.

The man, whose identity was not released, was captured in the Capitol basement "flag room," on the House of Representatives' side, police said.

The congressional day had barely begun when he entered the Capitol, apparently before any lawmakers appeared for work.
