You're always standing when you're pedalling, so there's not much need for lower gears for any sort of required uphill pedalling. On the plus side, smaller ranges mean shorter chains and therefore less chainslaaap when you're in the gears you actually use.
i live in PDX and run a 36. I have a 38 and 40 laying around, and never felt the need to put them on, anywhere, let alone at black rock or post. i can't remember what is in back, either 11 or 12.
36/11-23 but it's mostly for Whistler. It's kind of a bear when I'm pedalling localy but my bike isn't really meant for AM trails. I'll build up a smaller bike for the pedals that will probably be a 34/11-34 setup (or maybe a 10 speed so 11-36?).
