Depends where I ride...

All ratios are on my 29er.

32:17 --> Fast, rolly, singletrack
32:18 --> Normal riding with some climbs
32:19 --> Lots of climbing
32:20 --> What I'll probably run next year in the SM100 (14000' climbing over 100 miles in one day. The 19 was a bit much for me this year.)

You ride fixed on singletrack? :shocked: What - do you have circus training or something?
It's an East Coast thing, you wouldn't understand. ;) I knew a bunch of folks in VA running fixed on the trails.

As for my gearing:
32:17 on 26"
32:19 on 29"

Boy, 33 rings aren't the easiest to find!! Found one, ordered it, then learned it was backordered....and I want one soon before my worn ring wrecks my chain (and I dropped the chain 3x last night).

So I ordered a Surly stainless ring. Should be nice, but will add a few grams to my 'weight weenie' SS!! (it's not that light, but not bad at 23.4 lbs for a steel bike)

In response to a previous reply:

I am also in Va. and on XC singletrack is the only place I see single speeders. As a matter of fact, on the 28th of this month the state single speed championships are being held on a xc course.

I am starting off with 30:14 but it is a little tough, much climbing and it'll kill me.

Damn 28/12 sounds like a high gearing. I used to run a 25/12. Now Im running a 26t up front and I can still crank damn fast without maxing out, prolly gonna stick with it for a good minute.

32:16

I will be trying 32:17 in the future because it looks like I can ditch the chain tensioner if I do. Perfectly fitted chains on vertical dropouts make me hot.
