I was just wondering what ratio everyone here runs and what they use that bike for. I run my bike at 14-32 and use it for Dirt Jumps and Urban. I find that its good becuase anything lower and i cant get enough speed up to do some things. Just wondering what other SS'ers out there like to use for different things.

When my jumping bike was a SS I ran 32-16 (2-1). Actually even though it has gears on it now I still jump in that same gear. I could get plenty of speed for all the jumps I do even if I spun pretty fast. It's also a good gear if you're going to race or anything because you can get decently fast starts.

I think my friend runs 38-18. I think most people run their SS jumpers a little harder than 2-1.

I run a 32-16 and race XC on it. 32-13 fixed for the road and shooting around town.

I spin out quite a bit on the downhills and some flats, but for the most part it is pretty good.

I run 36-16 on mine, it's on 24"s and feels perfect.
Use it for urban/vert park.

ShdowConspiracy You will find yourself going a little slow with that ratio on 24"s.

33:17 is what I've got going for XC. slightly lower than 2:1. Why my ss cranks came with a 33, I can't say...but that ratio is perfect for the trails I ride.

I've read that odd teeth counts distribute wear evenly over the ring/cog, though I can't quite get my head around that one.

32x20 for trail riding

34x15 for commute

long steepish climbs mean 32x16 is for those with the power of Jan Ullrich to turn a big gear. I don't know any SSers in Missoula running bigger than 32x18, and 32x20 seems most common here.

(Front ring / Rear) x Wheel size (in inches) = Standard Ratio

32x20 for trail riding = 41.6 (quite low)
34x15 for commute = 58.9 (quite high)

on my 24" urban I run a 30-13 = 55.3 (Pretty standard for BMXs so makes sense for Park)

Anywhere between 32:16 and 32:18 = 46.2 to 52 (My kinda numbers)
I run a 42:17 for commuting = 64.2 (Too big for me for general use! I hope your commute is flat)

I assumed you're all running 26"s except for the 24" of Qualdude.

32:16 with 26 inch wheels, works fine, id like to drop it to 32:14 but the tension doesnt fit properly, its perfect as it is with vertical dropouts

i recently converted to ss, and am running 32/15 for dj, skatepark, and commuting. I like it so far, when the hills show up, all i do is stand up where i would have shifted up.

34:20 now, maybe 34:22 later. I have had 32:18 in the past on my previous SS's. I like technical, and some of the climbs around here are long. So once, I am up at the highest point, I don't care what I have coming down.

36:18 for the XC with 180 cranks and 26" wheels

Used to run 36:17 in AZ and for a bit after moving to VA, but had to back down to 2:1 for some of these hills. Trying to decide between the 36:18 and 36:20 for the SSWC.

42:16 for the fixed road, but could go a little higher on there.

I think 2:1 is a good start for any wheel size. 32:16 on my 24" when I raced it and 38:16 on my commuter. Hills are tough but doable and Seattle has a lot of hills. BTW I run 700c on my commuter.

I've got 50:16 on the fixie and 32:15 on the 24"wheeled do everything.

man accelerating at highspeed on the fixie is f-ing amazing! It's like cruising the highway and then punching the NOS :D
