Hello all,
I posted a month ago or so and am back because you are all very informative and helpful!
Please help,
I want to order a Ritchey adjustable stem for my mountain bike, but have no idea what size I need.

I have a '97 Specialized Rockhopper a1comp with a threadless headset.
any help is appreciated.

Measure the diameter of your bar, that's the second number in the product descriptions.
Then just choose the length (in this case between 80mm and 120mm).

You probably have a steerer tube that is 1 1/8" tube diameter and there should be no issues.

Your bike is 1 1/8" threadless. Your handlebar is is 25.4. The original stem is probably 100mm. That's easy to measure though.
