No mountain bikes, but my buddies that I rode with and hung out with in the late seventies: David, Jeff, Tommy, Dan, Rusty and Brian.

Strange.........I think I was busy making fun of ALL mountain bikers in the flourescent, road bike geometry days because........well.........the sport was kind of ghey back then. The bikes sucked and people thought it was just fine to let that mullet flop, the pink and purple fly high, and rock the oakley factory pilot steez in a speed suit and a styrofoam cooler on your head. I just couldn't get into a sport where bunny hopping was a mandatory pedal pull because you couldn't get over the back wheel. And you were supposed to ride these over rocks and roots?

So I guess I'll go as far back as Palmer. Cuz he came out of nowhere and killed it.

The disapprove button can be found at the upper right of this post btw.

I'm thinking a little earlier than the paul mitchell days but even then there was probably more than like, you know.....ZERO pro purse money at races.

I keep telling myself how boring mtb riding is to watch on TV......but then I remember golf and baseball............. Not sure what the deal is.

Farmer John absolutely. He did it all: BMX, DH, XC, and he schooled everyone. Johnny T was getting big air on hardtails with rigid forks way before Bender was sailing his engineless motocross bike.

As far as being a pure XC machine though, I like Ned.

Hell yeah, Nico is a great one, probably one of the fastest downhillers ever! Post a pic of him if you can find one!
Did anyone notice that Nico is doing rather well in WRC these days?

But for old-school it's still gotta be Tomac.
