Shut up and ride...
I've seen a few people wearing headphones when they ride. I was just curious as to how many actually do.

If you do, whatsetup do you use? (ie. MP3 Player, headphones, etc...)

to date i've only riden street and park w/ my ipod. well my fixed gear too. But not DH. with a bike that complicated, i want to be able to hear it, especially if things go wrong (like the cracking noise i heard last weekend when the spring on my rear shock snapped). also with trails merging and splitting, i want to be able to hear if someone is yelling to go a certain way, or is trying to pass, etc etc.

I do all my riding with my MP3 player and earbuds, it's like you're in your own Downhill Domination game......................I just haven't figured out how to land that quadruple, no hand backflip off a 300 foot drop to flat dammit

No riding with headphones for me. It pisses me off when I'm trying to pass someone on the trail and they can't hear me. When I finally pass they get all pissed that I didn't 'warn' them I was coming by.

"Listen dip-wad, don't get pissed at me because you're blocking your sense of hearing out on the trail."

For those of you that happen to be using them at the DJs or skateparks or are just plain faster than everyone else on the planet, please disregard.

yea i typically only use one of the buds when i do listen to music. and the volume is low enough so that its basically background music.

I like using one of these:

The speakers are in the straps so you can still hear what's going on around you. They have a new hydration version too and as a bonus, you plug in your phone and can take a call by pushing a button on the strap. Like you want to take a call while blasting through Yard Sale - "uh, can you hang on a second?"

i ride alot with an ipod, im sure it makes me go faster too, as im slightly less focused on the trail so i tend to be abit more loose on the bike

Never.

To hear what's going on around me I have to keep the volume low enough that it's stupid to even bother.

And I don't need any more distractions or gadgets.

Who makes that???

And I ride DH with mine in all the time. I run them pretty loud, I have found that I can still here other people when the come to pass me.

To be quite honest I don't see why people need to here there bike, if something breaks you will be able to tell when you feel it. As well If I cannot here as well it lets me focus on the trail ahead of me instead of what noises are going on

I guess maybe, but you probably can't hear them until they shout three or four times - enough to annoy you if it was the other way around.

get a better mix and set of ear buds? I put my buds in then clip my helmet. Keps them in, and if they come out, the hang in the helmet strap for easy access.
The earbuds that came with my Rio Forge hang over the ear.
It keeps them from coming off easily and also keeps them from being too jammed into my ears.

I couldn't ride without both since some stuff I listen to makes significant use of stereo separation (like Tool 10,000 Days, Wings for Marie).

I've got some Thump 2s from Oakley. I like 'em because you can push the speaker out of your ear, or totally away from it, so you can hear everything else. I usually just have the right side near my ear on a road ride, the left out so I can hear traffic. Makes riding alone a lot more fun. 6+ hours of run time, 512mb, all the songs I need for pretty much any ride. Plus no wires to catch on stuff. I thought they were kinda geeky until I tried them. Now I love them..
I mainly use them on road rides or climbs though, I like the sound of my tires on a nice long descent. And the tunes help you "tune out" on a long grinder of a climb.

never. i gotta hear what is going on with people around me and what is going on with my bike. if there is a hiker up or a man down, i want to hear someone call it out. it also shows respect to the others on the trail if you don't ride with phones. even if they are set low, all the hiker sees is another biker going along with headphones in, ignoring the others on the trail. i'm not saying that is always an accurate judgement, but i think that is the impression it gives.

oh yeah, and what is that backpack. i had one from another maker and the volume control died. i'd dig one with a hydration set up.

That is a Park City company called Skullcandy. They have some pretty cool stuff.

I've tried it xc riding a few times and didn't like it. I, as others have said, like to hear my bike and my fork and the trail. However, I do ride w/ them when I snowboard.

I thought it would be a good idea to help with better more aggressive runs....

So, I may try it, but t volumes that are tolerable for all the reason mentioned herein.

I do, but I have some limitations.

Road = Yes. 3-7 hour rides, I will be damned if I am not taking my Ipod.

Group rides/events (like the livestrong ride for example): Hell no! It annoys me to no end when people are trying to ride in the middle of a 5,000 person ride and can't hear anything around them. It's a constant passing situation and people are having to deal with cars on a lot more personal level due to the huge groups of riders, etc. Its just stupid.

XC riding: Yes. I get passed sometimes, but I don't have the volume cranked enough for it to ever be a problem. At higher speeds wind noise becomes more of an issue anyways.

DH: Sometimes. I have tried it but the chances of an earbud popping out are a lot greater, and you just cannot take care of it (like on a road bike). I pretty much have a system now where I listen on the chairlift but then pull them for the actual run.

DH racing: Although I have seen people do it, and the distraction might be nice...I would feel absolutely terrible if I fuked up someones race run because they were behind me and I couldn't hear. That said, it doesn't seem like anyone pulls off when you are behind them anyway, so whatever :)

XC Rides I do run my Ipod with the headphones that wrap around the back of your noggin. That way I can hear, and since I have funny ear holes the little ear bud ones just don't work.

However, not on the DH. I like to hear as well, and not just the bike.

I tend to be able to recreate songs in my head fairly well. Not just the lyrics, but the instrument bits as well, so it's like my own personal ipod. I don't think I could stand having headphones on. I'm with the others in liking to hear everything going on.

I almost always ride and race with tunes. It helps turn off the brain and let you "do" instead of "try". I have tested the idea by timing runs and I am definitely faster with tunes.

I had a friend who actually used to race in headphones. He would get the guys at the start to do a hand count down for him. I think it was kinda wierd. I ride with headphones occasionally when I ride road or go out riding urban by myself.

If you have problems with the ear buds falling out check out the sony ones they have at radio shack, they rap around your ears but are still small enough to get a full face over them and not fall out.

i used to if i was alone, i got stuck behind a rider last week, he had no clue, called right, no response, yelled right, no response, lost momentum, when he finally saw me he pulls out his earbuds, and gives me a look like i'm in the wrong. i might use mine on the street but not on the trail, oh his music was so loud i could hear it from 6 feet away.
