What's up Stanky?

Brady, Pete and I are still keeping it real down in Macon and I see/hear of Alonzo from timre to time. We have a huge dirt quarry pit place with big bike stuff to play on that'd worth your drive and demo's travel sometime.

Hey Stinky, still working at Outback Bikes?

I have that same exact scar on my left knee.

The Dirtbag forum is on hcor. Most S.E. folks are hitting up Spankmonkey more than hcor these days.

Nice truck, Kevin Gordon bought an '86 not too long ago. It's slow as hell but in really great shape.

See ya at Wolf

When did RM start? Sept 01???
paging through the top posters list it looks like some were around at least from 7/6/01 (The Toninator). RM himself was surely around before then but he deleted his account and started anew in 2002.

I love the medium format shots, look quite nice.

That first bike picture? Is that from Durango? It looks a lot like the spot where I tore my ACL in 2003.

I got the patellar tendon fix. It's been about a year and a half now and everything is holding up fairly well. Not a fun injury.

Howdy, I opted for the same treatment. Its been just over 2 months since the surgery, I still have a lot of physical thereapy to go thru, but Im in no hurry.

Tore it right as fall semester of school was starting, and just couldnt take the time off from a full schedule of classes to recover properly. I had custom fitted DonJoy carbon fiber brace made, and schedudled the srugery for christmas. The brace was amazing, I could run, jump, ride like it was perfect. Im definatley having another one made for the race season, as a preventative. They only cost 1200, you do need a perscription to get the insurance co to pay for it tho... Which they did.

The Hospital bill was right at 11k, and the doctors services were right around 11k also. We only owed $700. HEALTH INSURANCE RULES!

The brace im considdering for racing riding.... The one i have know is awesome, super light weight, full carbon frame... but Im looking for somthing a little more impact resistant, and have been looking at this, also made by donjoy. its aluminum, with an shin guard that can be attached....

and

The one I was using prior to surgery was the Definace 3. its a got warranty that if you tear you acl, again while wareing the brace, the will cover all costs of the next proceeedure... kinda kewl

I ahve a CTI2 brace and a knee pad will actually attach directly to it. And I would suggest without a doubt using your knee brace during at least the first season after your surgery. You'll put your foot down and hyperextend it and feel that brace catch. Then you'll thank your lucky stars EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU ride from that point on. Your pattelar will be so tender and sore that even whacking it with the pad in place will make you cry out.

I wouldn't dare wear mine without it during that first season and it really paid off!

I will check in and see if my insurance co will cover one of those custom cti2 braces. They look pretty promising. I really dig the Donjoy one I have. I can set how far in locks out open and closed in 5 degree incraments, which was great when I was still walking and riding when I had the injury. Also, donjoy will resize the brace for free(IE make a new one) for up 5 months after the purchase date... I need to wait a while be for I get one made so I can build up more muscle mass.

When do you do yours? just ACL?

I did it in the Winter of 96. I was told by some dumbass old orthopedic to "go ahead and ride on it if it doesn't hurt. It's severed so you're not gonna do any more damage."
What he failed to say was that I would further damage my meniscus if I did so since the ACL wasn't holding anything in place. He scheduled my surgery for 3 weeks later.

I had this weird feeling about the guy after talking to other people with the same surgery and went back to THE SAME PRACTICE 2 weeks later...and spoke to a sports specific, younger, Cat 2 roadie orthopedic and he flipped out. He was like "No, you'll mess up all the cartlidge" but it was too late. I had raced on it and torn the meniscus in half on one side and chipped off some on the other side. I couldn't feel it though. Cartlidge doesn't really have nerves.

He got my surgery done quick, cleaned everything up and I woke up with my leg already in a machine moving it from straight to 45 degrees. He had me sleep in it overnight to keep it from clotting and to keep the joint from seizing. He had me on crutches the next day and rehab for 8 weeks with a physio every single day.

He asked if I had a stationery trainer, even offered me his if I didn't have one. I did, so he had me get on it and just turn the pedals with no resistance every day for "as long as you can stand it".

Thanks to him I had a better range of motion and dramaticly less swelling than anybody the physical therapist had seen in a while.

The thing some people won't tell you is that the hardest part is at around 3-6 months, your other knee is GONNA KILL YOU! You over compensate during that period so much that it really stresses it. My doctor had me re learn how to weight my bad knee. He said 40% of the athletes that have ACL surgery would blow their other knee out, mainly from over compensating.

But after those nightmarish tidbits, there is bright light at the end of the tunnel. I got back to full strength after right at 1 year. It will ache for about a year and a half. But eventually that goes away.

As for the brace, jsut go with what you feel comfortable. The Donjoy sounds cool. I love my CTI2...but seldom wear it anymore. Guess I should but that banging on your top tube will drive a guy crazy.

Ahh.. Coolness. as I said, mine was early last summer, Was origionaly diagnosed as a incomplete dislocation by the ER. They said no need for MRIs, even though I said I wanted one. They gave me crutches, said to stay off it for a few weeks, itll be better.

Well, the swellinf went down, and the pain was mostly gone, I could walk. but super unstable. So we went to the orthopeidic clinic here that does all the work for the Falcons football, and Thrashers hockey teams. Did MRIs, the MRI tech said it was obivously torn. 3rd degree tear, and a medial meniscus tear also. So, scheduled appoint to meet the surgeon, and discuss options. Was gonna go with a Cadaver ACL so I wouldnt have to deal with all the extra stuff that comes with the grafts... I did a lot of reading, and thinking, and as I came closer to deciding, I went with the Petellar graft. Very sickening/interesting proceedure... Plus... I dont want some dead dudes haunted acl in my knee...

So, by the time we established that It needed to be reapired with surgery, I was a week out from fall semester classes... The first open surgery date was a month from then... There was no way i could take all the time off to recover, and still pass a full 17 hours of course credits. I got into some light therapy and stuck it out. dec 10 was the surgery... checked in at 7am, was wheeled into the OR at 7.30, was home in my own bed by noon. All outpatient, I only spend 30 minutes in OR recovery room

I how much diff yours was . then mine, being almost 10yrs apart. The crazyest thing is that the bone plugs on either end of the peice of tendon grafted from the patellar, are secured by biodegradable screws.... As the bone plugs knitt into the holes drilled thru he top of the tibia, bottom of femur, the bone will grow around the screws, and the the screw will actually be just like bone... I think they said the screws are made from Coral... As in from the ocean... Pretty rediculous.

After the surgery, the doctor was like... Btw, there was two mensicus tears.
The second was prolly from the phys thereap i was doing before

does this look familar...

And thats just the hospital/anesthetic bill I also have the full doctors bill scanned too if you wanna compare.
