I'm looking to blow some cash on a wide angle lens.

Whats the general consensus on a Canon or Equiv Wide angle lens for about $1500 or less? for Fast action bike shots as well as landscapes?

I have a Canon 40D and 50D.

I like both of these:
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Thanks all.

We have a 16-35 f/2.8 L (not MKII). On the 30D it isn't all that wide. On the 5D it is ridiculous. Maybe look into the 16-35 f/2.8 L also as we got ours for around $800 lightly used.

The 30D isn't a full frame sensor whereas the 5D is correct? That would be the reason why it doesn't look wide.

I went from a Nikon D200 with a 1.4x DX sensor to a D700 with a full frame and the different with the 16mm fisheye is unbelievable, such a big difference.

On crop sensors, those aren't all that wide. I've got a Sigma 10-20mm, the variable aperture version. The new one is a constant f/3.5 aperture. Nice color, contrast and the distortion isn't bad. Especially if you're not shooting architecture.

All depends on what the OP thinks is "wide". I have the Tamron 17-50mm and agree that 17mm on a crop sensor isn't very wide. If you're looking at "ultra wide zooms" and aren't looking at making the jump to full-frame anytime soon, check out ones in the 10-12mm range. There's the Sigma 10-20mm, the EF-S 10-22mm, Sigma 12-24mm, Tokina 12-24mm, etc.
