Just read that the reddish knob thead was shut down for the second time. Are you guys idiots. Ridemonkey gives us the space to come on here and kill some time, plan rides ask questions and what not. I say ban the dumba**'s that cant read the rules. I read the reddish knob thead this morning and knew it was going down hill fast. There are a lot of other sites out there like ridemonkey, I hardly ever visit them because of the assinine drivell that are in most of the posts. Please dont turn ridemonkey into just another idiotic site. Dont get me wrong Im all for having a good time on this site. I just dont think that some of the people posting here know when to stop because they have crossed the line between funny and insulting.

Rant over.
Thanks for your time
Dennis

Shut up and ride...
A bit worse actually. Guys, let's cut up and have some fun, but lets tone it down a bit. This forum (VA & Surrounding Areas) gets read and looked at A LOT.

There are more people who read stuff in here than post, or they just read and never post.

Point is, we need to tone it down. When the last flame wars happened, about 6 months ago, HeadMonkey was going to shut down the whole VA forum.

I hate to be a kill-joy, but when I get a lot of PM's and personal e-mails of complaints (some people I've never even heard of) I have to do what I did.

Yeah, it puts me in an awkward position, since I know most of you guys and ride with you, and to be honest, I hate to be the one sounding like a dick, but, that's part of the job as mod in here.

Funny thing is, they found a local hiker dead on the trails, and if any relatives cruise this board and read some of the shat, well, there ya have it.

mud'n'sweat actually had a good idea. If there is something deemed offensive and there is a complaint, to edit the offensive part...

Are you for reals? Forgive me if I'm just naive but if that's for real, I'm not sure I even wanna go ride there again.

Creepy.

Where exactly was this? I haven't found any news articles talking about this in VA.

Don't waste your time. Everyone here with any common sense (or can read the rules) knows what's acceptable and whatnot.

Post something unacceptable and it'll get deleted. Keep doing it and your gone. :nopity:

Anyone have a suggestion for another forum all of the VA board frequenters can use? Preferably one without constant pop-up bombardment?

think of it like this... take whatever you're going to post and run it through the 'would i say this at my workplace?' test. because this is a real business, with real sponsors & real people looking at it.

just act like grownups and it'll all be easy.

Everything I have said I could say at the dinner table with a business client, yet alone at my work place.

Exactly. My clients, my employer, etc, value my opinion, even if it is vulgar, garrish, or offensive. They have the common respect and intelligence to understand that if its a joke that it ought to be taken as such, and if my intentions are more serious, that what I say should be taken to heart. The problem here is cultural, and as I see it there is a massive lack of respect for the culture which I bathe myself in. I am not going to apologize to those who would read this forum and then complain behind my back about what it is I or anyone else have said in it. Its like that old saying goes; "If you don't know, you'd better ask..." If what we write offends you, then maybe you ought to examine the root of that offense as opposed to shrieking for the immediate censoring of ideas or jokes.

Once you have examined the base of what bothers you, then come out with something thought out, spell checked and grammer edited, and see where it takes you...

Jesus H. Tap Dancing Christ on a popsicle stick, we're mostly adults or at the minimum smart enough to know how to fire up a computer. Act like it for a change, quit being a bunch of snivling marks and narcs!

Mountain biking is about being an individual, having differing ideas, and being a sort of educated outlaw. Most groups don't like us, and I am good with that. I'd rather be dead and cool then living and lame.

I was thinking exactly the same thing.
Couple of other things
1- Dont forget this is a buisness. If our actions cause just one ad to be pulled we are hurting ourselves just as bad as ridemonkey.

2- Perception is 90% of reality. Most of us dont know each other except for on here, but if you are perceived to be an asshat on here that thought will be carried into the real world. One example, I wont use any names.I know of on guy that has been banned from here under several different names. The first time I meet him I thought he was a jerk just from what I knew from his posts. Once I got to know him that all changed but I still had to get past that perceived view.

3- I hate every thing having to be PC just as badly as the rest of you. But if you cant stop and ask yourself if what you are posting might be offensive to someone than maybe you just shouldnt post anything.

4- Dont forget we are all here because of our love for riding. If us sitting on our fat ass's in front of the computer is causing this much heartache then maybe we should just get on our bikes and go for a nice long soothing zen like ride.

Back to point 2 if I am coming accross as a jerk then scew you Im taking my ball and going home:love:

Once again thank you for your time

So you'd encourage self censorship to avoid offending the small minded and those lacking the backbone to say something on their own, much less ride a bike. Come on man, this is the very basis of our society, Canadian or American. The free exchange of ideas, even the offensive, rude, amusing, pornographic or just plain silly is so central to our way of life that it blows me out to think of not saying what is on my mind.

Maybe if my words or thoughts offend, or the words or thoughts of another offend, you should step back and ask yourself why it bothers you so.

I live in Virginia, with a bunch of tattoos and long hair, so of course I live under a rock! Its a very nice rock, right next to the water, and I have all the fish and tourists I can eat, so I am a very happy troll.

I wouldnt call it self censorship. I call it thinking about what you say before you say it. Looking before you leap if you will. There is a set of rules that we must all abide by here. That is one of the reasons I love ridemonkey. There plenty of other sites where you can post what ever you want. If we could all post and say anything we wanted it would take about one day for this site to go into the crapper just like those other sites. The funny thing is I think we would get along great face to face because I say what ever jumps into my head usually before I have a chance to think about it. On here I choose to think about what I say before I post it.

The faulty assumption is that everyone should seek to, and then take action to, not offend each other and adhere to a lowest common dullness denominator.

Great humor the world over has been offensive to people, even large groups of people, throughout time and for good reason. So don't obtusely assume that your offense to a joke, sarcasm, or pointed wit with you at the receiving end, wasn't precisely planned to be offensive.

Moreover, you're fooling yourself if you think everyone with a cranky offensive online persona is just a put-on. They may dislike you and your foney agenda as much as you dislike being on the receiving end of their jabs. Why would they necessarily want to have anything to do with you in real life?

People aren't all smiling all dancing all getting-along in real life, and online is no utopian exception. And that's ok with me.

All that said, RM is a business, and free speech like affirmative action only applies to the government. Don't fool yourself though, conflict breeds page views. But if you don't like the place there's something to be said for insults wrapped in subtly....wrapped in bacon. Mmm, bacon. ;)

Plus, who knows, something better may well come along.

*The use of "you" in that post is the royal sense of the word.

My advertisers don't, and this site is expensive to run, so unless you're going to cover my expenses learn to deal with the rules. Deal with it, or use one of the forums linked to in this thread. :nopity:

Ok Herr Dictator, show me the rules again. I am too American, i.e. too fat, lazy and slow, to find them on my own. Show me the rules that ban joking, fun, and merriment of any kind.

Hell, long as I am at it, can you justify the irony in your hypocracy in taking American sponsorship and instituting Canadian demogogury in the ideological sense of the term?

OK, The head monkey spoke. So, this is how it will work.

One - Those who do not like the rules, can leave

Two - Adhere to the rules

Three - You get one private warning

Four - after a warning, a one month ban.

Five - Continual infraction = permanent ban.

These are the rules. We all agreed to abide by them when we joined RM.

Poking fun at or insinuating a race color creed or religion is not only not permitted, but is against the law in the United States. So why would this be a difficult thing to grasp?

That's the rules, plain and simple.

This is a private enterprise. If you don't like the way it is run, then you can leave at any time. You make the rules in your house. This is our house and these are our rules.

 they're the first post in every board on this site.

Who told you not to joke, have fun, or be merry? You guys were making cracks about beating hikers to death, and perpetuating stereotypes about mountain bikers being a bunch of irresponsible hooligans. Surely I don't need to explain why that's a bad thing.

Because the business operates in the United States as well, and as such, fall under the federal jurisdiction of same and must adhere to the rules and follow the statutes as outline in the Uniform Commercial Code.

Will I am simply discussing legal theory, this is not legal advice nor should it be considered a threat, but a mere correction of your theoretical assumption.

I have a lot of respect for you, i truly do, however when you begin to make statement about the legalities, It needs two things, clarification, and correction when needed.

My reason for knowing this? I am a paralegal.

Since the big words are being thrown around, reference the UCC here.

You keep saying this, but none of us even know what was said or what was construed or considered to fall under this description.
