Going to Las Vegas in two weeks. Be honest, how damn hot is it going to be?

Anyone have some tips on where the best Mexican food place is? I don't care how ghetto it is...

Cheap place to buy beers? I remember seeing on the Food Network years ago a small brewery somewhere that had $1 beers after the tour, but can't remember the name of it.

Any place in the city where a bike can be rented for a day? Not looking for anything special, even just a city type bike would be cool.

Tacos Mexicos on Sahara (near the strip) is my fvcking FAVORITE. Just get 6-10 of the little tacos with 'Con Todos', and gorge on carrots at the salsa bar.
It's the best ghetto taco joing in the world, IMO.

There is also a good Peruvian restaurant out in Henderson that is worth a go, as well as an AMAZING hole in the wall Thai place out by Sunset Station casino in Henderson...worth the trip if you have wheels.

You can drink for FREE in the casinos if you play/gamble most any game. Best bet is to sit at a bar with the video poker games and put a few bucks in and order directly from the bartender for free. Or play at the tables and wait for the cocktail waitress doing her rounds to get to your table. Sitting at a slot machine is a hit/miss service for drink orders from the waitress.

What Scrub said. My brother and I did that a couple years back...just got hamdammered. Then this hot girl comes up to us and invites us to a party in her room...I am thinking, "Wow, people sure are friendly around here..." I say as much to the bartender, and he says "Dude, first time in Vegas?"

Thanks for the tip on All Mountain Cyclery.

This is the only rational advice in this thread.
If only the rest of my group understood this. How big of a dick move would it be if I bailed on the group of people for most of a day? I'm thinking that I don't really care :D

Yes stay away, very away. But if you have to here is what you do.

-find the casinos with vid poker and drink for free

-Ellis Island on Kova just south of flamingo has a decent brewery with a pretty good IPA and since its coming up maybe an october fest.

-Make your way to palace station and eat pan roast at the oyster bar. open 24hrs so hit this late since the bar only has 13ish stools and the wait can be long. Have the cooks put three habaneros in the pan roast and with all the awesome flavors it will snap you right back to norm. Anchor steam on tap here. trust me eat the pan roast.

-When you wake back up in your hotel after a 78 min sleep, head back over the Ellis island. They have a Bomb Steak and egg breakfast. Drink more of their decent craft brew and maybe blow 20 bucks on roulette.

-do it all over again.

I drove through Vegas once. My foot didn't come off the gas pedal until St. George. We camped on the mesa and rode Gooseberry and the JEM trail for a few days, it was good.

I'll second Ellis Island. If you have to be in Vegas, the beer is decent there.

I've had a few conferences and a bachelor party in Vegas. I've had fun every time and stupid stories to tell. BUT I can only tolerate it for no more than 72hrs. My liver starts failing, and my wallet gets too light.

As long as you realize Vegas is a facade. And don't get carried away with the hedonism or gambling, most people have fun there.

Unless of course you are a hipster or impossibly counter culture.

Vegas is fun, but I can only handle so much. I only live about 4 hours away, so it's usually a go-to for bachelor parties. I like to go ride Bootleg (in Boulder City), seeing as the rooms are cheap and trails are dope. Then, we can head into Vegas for a couple hours at night and head back to the hotel. But, I usually only go from Fall to Spring.

Jeez, you guys suck at having fun.

I've been to Vegas once and will probably not go again unless it's paid for by someone else, but surely you can manage to enjoy exploring a new place for a few days.

The Hoover Dam is an interesting piece of engineering and is built on a pretty impressive scale - worth the trip (and the tour if you're interested in that kind of thing). Red Rock Canyon is really pleasant - I wish I would have spent more time there. As it was, I drove out there in the late afternoon and spent a few hours walking the trails/climbing the rocks/watching the animals and finished the winding, 18-mile drive through the park in a beautiful sunset.

The scale of the buildings on the strip itself are kind of unbelievable. Places look so close, but you end up walking forever. A good blackjack table was the most fun I had gambling - other games were plenty fun, but I ended up at a couple really social and jovial blackjack tables. As said earlier, as long as you're gambling, the drinks are free.

Some of the hotels are really stunning. The Fiori Di Como at the Bellagio is beautiful and I know it's completely cliche, but I sat there and watched the fountains for quite a while. The Eiffel Tower provides a good view of the Strip, and you can go on a roller coaster at New York, New York (though I didn't make it to that one, my girlfriend assures me it was fun). Or you can go up to the Stratosphere and do the rides on the top.

I completely agree that it's a place of massive excess and not a top vacation destination... but if you're going there anyway and can't have fun on your first time in Vegas, you're probably not very good at having fun anywhere.

Vegas in August is nobodies idea of fun. Unless you're a "whips and chains are fun" kind of guy. NTTATWWT.

A "date" means something totally different then you think it does. Never put a "date" on your debit card. Do not, I repeat do not take your "date" back to your room. Never ever get in a car with your "date", even if it is a taxi. Cops drive taxis too. If your "date" smokes crack in the bathroom it will set off the smoke alarm and hotel security will come to your room and they know what crack smells like so do not lie to them as they will call the cops if you do. You're welcome.....

I used to have to go to Vegas twice a year, I quickly figured the town out, and how to basically avoid the strip completely except during the day at the trade shows. Lots of great riding there....I used to despise going, now I find new restaurants/etc every time I go.
Take a cab out the the baby 'Chinatown' for a good meal...
