Well, truck has an appointment with the "specialist" in early November to more precisely diagnose the low-compression issue. I'm hoping it's something as simple as a slightly cracked valve... :disgust:
One of 3 things, head gasket, valve job or bad rings/piston, either way wont be cheap in labor. If it were me I would skip the mechanic and go straight to trade it in. Let the wholesalers deal with it.

My guess is valve - he said the compression when cold is ~90psi and it comes up to 120psi after a few revolutions. But that is still low compared to other cylinders.

I am *not* interested in fucking around in the vehicle-purchase department at this point in history. I guess I may have to, depending on what the shop finds, but that would be a worst-case scenario.

Thing runs fine - if it didn't throw the code, you'd be hard pressed to tell there was a problem.

yeah, been there, it's a tough choice, spend a grand or two to see what's wrong then another grand or two to even put it back together if it's minor, otherwise it's a grand or two on top of one of the three fixes, my guess for any three would be in the additional 3-6k mark, versus, clear the code and trade it in.

One thing i have learned with compression loss issues is if it happens on one, its ready to happen on the rest.

It should be pretty easy for them to tell what is causing it, without opening it up much. They can stick a camera down there and look at the valves, cylinder and piston.

How much is a used Ford engine going for these days?

If it's an import it will be crazy expensive, Toyotas and nissans are the absolute worst and require a ton of labor, Ford and chevy actually plan for it and the costs aren't too bad but just means other failures are on the horizon.

Your main concern will probably be supply chain issues and having a rig on the rack for 4 weeks or more

It's the Ford 5.0l Coyote motor. If it's genuinely FUBAR, perhaps I'll find a shop to put a tricked-out 5.0l in it. :brows:
i'd take all the simplicity of that silver gmc pickup my dad had in the early 80's that was diesel and had 2 20 gallon tanks...

My new Rav4 sends me parking location updates to my phone. It also criticizes my driving. I mean they’re called safety features but really it’s just an automated back seat driver. Need to find the single dude override switch. Definitely not rolling with any kind of simplicity here.

my dad had a 78 k5 blazer. loved that thing. it was a rust bucket with 220k when he got rid of it though. also got about 10mpg on a good day.

/me went against the orthopedic surgeon’s advice and rode to and from the hospital this afternoon. Wore the brace, went slowly over the few unavoidable bumps, and it all was just fine. I’ll wait for real trail riding (even easy) for the two weeks more recommended, though—this is basically the same stress as grabbing the bar on the Peloton.

does it have adaptive cruise control and lane assistance....as in it beeps like R2D2 on meth when you stray into another lane?

the follow up to the gmc was a 85 f150....doo doo brown on light doo doo brown...straight 6....3 spd od....it was a fucking joy to beat the hell out of...

It's not that new...but I'm not hard on equipment and basically owned it when I had two kids under 5. Should be fine just ya never know.
