Another rider taken out on Livewire... Rich (surfinguru) went down this weekend on the step-up. Details aren't too clear, and he doesn't remember much because he had a pretty good concussion. Aside from that he ended up with a pretty bad separated shoulder. Heal up soon man! Apparently another guy went down right after Rich was whisked off the mountain in exactly the same spot.

Careful out there...

When big/fun features are made ppl are going to get broke off, that's the nature of the beast, but we still want them there (and more of them)

I'm a decent dirt jumper (on a hard tail at least) and I still haven't cleared / caught backside on those.
They are big, fast and the consequences are severe if you go down

Pre-inspect, know your limits, accept that you may get hurt...

PS: to the latest crasher, heal up soon mang

I'm not saying they should stop building, and I agree w/everything you said. Just FYI Rich is a really good rider. Won a bunch of the CCCX DH races in his class, good on the jumps, etc. I guess it can happen to any of us...

It is not that the features are too big, it is how they are built. I haven't been to n* for a little over a week so I don't know what changes they have made but think of it like this. Remember how they had the set of 3 tables that were so close together, people were falling left and right because you would come into that section so fast and land on the next jump. Then they got rid of the middle table after someone almost died. So now you come into the step up thingy way to fast. The first time I hit that thing I landed to flat and fell and I am an expert rider so you cant say that people are falling on the trail because they suck. That landing needs to be a lot less steep and a lot longer. Period. I hope they changed that because I have heard of at least 5-6 people that have gotten hurt on that jump from the internet boards alone.
Also, another problem is inexperienced riders riding the trail that they are not ready for. I think northstar needs to expand their more beginer friendly trails for riders to expand their skills on instead of having them ride something they are not ready for and get hurt. IE something like crank it up or b-line at whistler.

Hey, just checking in guys...

Shoulder hurts like a mofo, but will recover. Seeing my specialist on Monday for the complete once over. I have an existing labral and supraspinada tear which I was waiting until late fall to have repaired, but I might just bump that up now and get it over with.

The concussion? Well, what can you say about those? You just have to wait for them to heal. I only have VERY limited recollection of Saturday. I only remember a few bits and pieces up to about an hour or so before the crash and I'm still getting severe bouts of "tiredness" and disorientation.

Talking with the crew I was with, sounds like I came in with alot of speed, threw down the whip, way over cleared and landed to flat basically exploding upon impact. (Longer and less steep transition sounds like the thing to do.) I love N* and will be back without question. (Hell, my wife is stoked and can't wait to go back for more lift assisted riding!) It sounds like they do need to do some work to even out the spacing and flow, but at least they're working on it. Give 'em time and be positive with the suggestions - it can only help. We're not Whistler, but it's all we've got for the time being.

You've got a great attitude, and it's good to know you're all right. I completely agree with your last couple of comments. The trail crew members I know are good people who are busting ass to build some kick-ass stuff. It will take time to gather feedback and make desired changes. Personally I have faith that it will continue to get better and better.

Thanks OG, really, there's no use in being negative and I'll be DAMNED if I'm going to take the p*ssy way out and either sue or just bad mouth the place in principle. I'm just pissed at myself for making a mistake.

More than anything, I'm really stoked my wife is jazzed about her experience despite the scare I've given her. Everyday, she's been talking about it how fun it was and how much she progressed in one day and can't wait to go again. So when's closing weekend again?

Glad to see you are back online. Hope you are healing up good man. Any better idea on the Whistler trip?

Thats awesome about the wife riding too!

I am going up to Northstar for the first time this season at the beginning of next month. I will for sure be taking it easy while I'm out there.

...........hold on............I'll type something when I quit laughing here................

okay...................oh wait.........nevermind.............

Whew..........I think I'm ready.............

Expert riders know how to use their brakes. I stacked on my face on the third table after the stepup last week because the first two are decent sized and the 3rd is tiny but most importantly.............because I was a dumbass and didn't do a roll through of what was there first.

Hopefully you don't go pinning into rock gardens you can't see the bottom of. A jump is no different.

At least I can admit it:D

As far as beginner riders not 'belonging'.........please.......passing people in the air on that trail is the most fun I've ever had a northstar.

I think the moral of this debate is to just roll through stuff first and scope it out before hitting it way too fast and dying. When I got up here earlier this week I just rolled everything on livewire and then rode it... i brake everytime into the step up.

btw the trail is pretty sick now. looks like they're doing even more work where it crosses the fireroad and that should be sick!

Well I am glad I made you laugh. Yes I know how to use a brake, I don't like to but I know how to. And when I went over that step up, who would expect it drop practically straight down on a trail that "flows". My point wasn't to sound like a retard but to say that everyone is getting jacked up on that thing and it should probably be changed before someone breaks their neck and will never walk again from it.
Oh and I rode std without looking at it. I guess that makes me a dumbass. But that makes my point, mountainbikers are dumb or risktakers, we do stupid **** like that, sometimes it works out fine and other times not so fine.
As far as what you said about beginners not belonging; well a beginner rider does not belong on a black or double black trail. Northstar does need to add more intermediate trails for them that way they don't clog up the harder trails. Have you ever block passed someone on karpiel? You should try it. And honestly I don't give a flying **** what you think about me so I hope you had a good laugh while trying to make fun of me while completely ignoring the point I was trying to make. I am done posting here.
Peace out,
Ryan

Relax man.........I'm just yanking your chain and being a dick. It's pretty normal for me.:)

But I'm as stoked as anyone about the new interest the mountain has in actually taking an active involvement in building a mountain bike park this year (and hopefully for subsequent years).

I actually agree with the points you've made, I just wanted to give yo u a hard time over your expert status;). Like any trail, the new livewire stuff requires a bit of knowledge to dial. Going full bore your fist run is going to result in some boo boos that you and I both discovered. For someone that knows the trail it's fine and a lot of fun. But for a first timer or 'beginner' there are some surprises. But that's like any trail. Even the model a-line has some short jumps that you'll kill yourself on if you hit with any speed and pop. Livewire isn't unique in that respect.

Unfortunately everyone who goes there will fancy themselves an adventure and see what these 'black diamond' trails are all about. Building more intermediate trails won't alleviate that. Hell flameout and big trees are more dangerous than livewire by far. Have you seen the singles on those things!!??:D

I hated that step up the first day it opened too. Now I love floating down that backside. Just use your head (yeah, coming from me:D) and you'll get some fun riding in. Some people unfortunately will have to learn this at northstar vs. their normal riding environments.

But seriously.......wtf is up with the fastest straightaway with the longest jumps going into a non berm?????;)

That rock/wall ride looks fun. I'll be up next weekend and will look for it.

IVC, Kidwoo was one of the first to say those jumps need some help or people are gonna get hurt. As for beginner/intermediate trails, personally I would rather see the trail crew hours devoted to tweaking/finishing the new advanced trails.

I rode the new section of LIVEWIRE and all I can say is WOOOOOW!!
This trail is the sh**. And then there is BOONDOCKS....holy crap....that is a crazy trail. Those gaps are pretty impressive.
You folks at Northstar have really stepped it up this year....MANY PROPS TO THE TRAIL CREW!!!!!

unless they are in need of repair...
That stepup to steep landing is quite tech and dangerous, but also makes it fun
it's not overly dangerous, like say, a hidden pit, with sharpened sticks
or a blind cliff
it is easy to go too fast or lose it or wreck yourself
i imagine catching backside on it would feel quite good (still brake scrubbed b4 it cuz wasn't feeling it)

Ok, so this is going to sound gaysallytruckerweak-like, however, I'm having a blast with their Thursday-night xc series. 5 down, 2 to go, and the last one is 2 days after what'll be Alaina's 9th b-day. The laps are about 3 1/2 miles (multiple laps based on experience), and have been using either Competition or Woods for the downhill part. The uphill has been on the fire road by the lifts, as well as a small singletrack section (don't recall name). Sure helps getting my fat ass out of the house for a couple of hours!!!!!!!!!!!!
