Let me rephrase, I'm considering what lightweight 120mm forked XC bike I might purchase in order for it to propel me forwards on some long races I'm considering.

To be fair, the marathons are a fairly different kettle of fish to the XCOs. They're usually point to point, or massive loops, sometimes multiple days in a row - not just multiple laps of the same short circuit. Without frequent feed zones and stuff you need a bike that is comfortable for longer and can carry more water/snacks.
I've been running specialized shoes for over 15 years, and am on my second pair.
