Come on over to Massanutten YEE-HA!
GES #1 Series Kickoff

We have added a rock bridge to cover the spring blowout from last year.

We also ran a mini hoe for 12" drainage pipes installed in the infamous
Barrel Turns. The course has new lines in the turns and few rocks picked
for better flow. Took a few trees & stumps out of turns for faster exits.

Most trail work since 1997 World Cup. Come enjoy the ride.

Practice Friday: 9:00-5:00 PM This is a change from the previous years.
We have opened practice from noon to 6:00 the previous events.

Awesome, this will be the first year I've actually been able to attend the race. Going to try and get my new bike dialed this weekend. Unfortunately the descents on my local XC trails probably don't mimic the course at Mass.

Just make sure its raining on your local trails, as it will always rain at Mass. Your one guarentee.

Hmmmmmm, How did I get that sunburn all of those years?

Hopefully last years wet spring will stay dry for May 1, 2010

Have you guys thought about putting some course marshals around to prevent bottlenecks? The only time I've been (2 years ago), there was a guy just standing with his bike on top of that very first large rock and it resulted in a pretty nice accident. Also, I seem to remember those 2 tricky right hand turns getting really backed up from people just standing around in the trail.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to making a triumphant return this year. :thumb:

thats awesome. I remember saturday morning practice last year being a waterslide. A legit torrent goin on in the "barrel" turns. Regardless, mass is one of the most amazing races ive been too.

Are there any pictures of this handy work?

A few of us from MI will be there. I look forward to 40+ cat which is always competitive. Damn, I just remembered Heath is turning 40 this year.

Pray for rain...I mean sunshine.

Is anyone in the greater Baltimore area going to be riding any DH spots in the next couple of weeks to warm up for Mass? It's been a while since I've ridden a proper DH trail and I feel like I might need a refresher before I kill myself at Mass.

can't wait! my rims...on the other hand are leaving puddles on my garage floor out of pure fear...that place eats wheels ;)

VADHPROMO - there are showers on sight correct? i may have my races mixed up but i remember getting a shower at the gym last year on friday night (i must have showered because i was nasty from practice and managed to eat at chilis friday night w/out getting kicked out for offending other customers w/ my body armor stench ;) )

Agree with the rim comment and yes, last year they had a pass so that you could get a shower at the rec center type place down the road. Quite nice after practice day!

Judging by the previous years I was wondering which tires to put on my rims, ill be bringing both so its no that big of a deal. I have a Minion DHF 3c set and a Swampthing 2.5 ST set. Which would you guys recommend for the Mass race, I dont really remember the soil that well.

Either should be fine, but I would lean more towards the DHF because I think the sidewalls are a little beefier than the Swampers. I raced it last year (i.e. after an overnight deluge) and it really did not warrant a straight up mud tire IMO, or even Swampthing IMO. There are a sh!t ton of (sharp) rocks, and the soil seems to be a pretty nice silty loam, so it doesn't turn into hub deep Snowshoe peanut butter. Just my take tho...

Also, if you run the 3C DHFs, don't be surprised if the rear gets chunked up pretty bad.

Those of you that have ridden this race... how appropriate would this be for a first time DH race? I've watched quite a few of the videos and the course looks pretty damn fun. Also, is there a cutoff for online registration, all I see is that there is no on site registration.

I think it would be a good first DH race. There's nothing overly hard on the course (though there are a few tricky sections) and if you race beginner, you can just cruise it. The most important part as always is having fun - which you will do unless some dude decides to stand on top of the first rock while you're taking a run.

It was my first DH race and I did it on a 6" travel bike. I was hooked and got a proper DH bike shortly after. It's a great course.

Looking forwards to it, really hope I can make it. I really enjoyed it last year save for the two mud holes which killed the flow, but it sounds like those have been fixed.

Mass O Nasty in 2 weeks. Time to kick your training in high gear for that fire road sprint!

Sadly I have a biology exam Friday at 3, hopefully I can still make it out sometime Friday night.

What kind of tire pressure are you guys running?

Not used to those rock gardens down here in Florida.

Thanks for replying.

if the forecast calls for no rain, I'm pitching my ENO between lift chairs. That way I'll be the first racer up top. They can just hit the switch and carry my sleepy self right to the top.

10-day forecast as of today is calling for rain all through next wednesday...hope it ends before the race! that place is down right dangerous up top when it's slick
