Have you tried the shorty in the sierra powder/moondust/kitty litter??

That type of soil was always my nemesis when I raced dh....im interested in the exo version when it comes out for china peak, northstar and mammoth enduro races..seems like it would cut through that stuff pretty good

Nah when that thing was released, it was ski season here. Then I blew up my knee last month as things were melting out. I'm sure it would work fine. Might get a little weird on hard turns. I still think the g5 in a tough trail casing would be a better all arounder that still works great in that stuff (which it does). You don't really need big spaces between sideknobs in that powdery stuff since nothing is going to stick to your tire. By that logic, there's no reason to NOT run a tire with really close rows of sideknobs. It's just going to give you more support in turns.

If neither are out by then, check out those Michelin wildrokkkkker2 tires. I haven't ridden them yet but once you get a good look at that wall of sideknobs, there's really no question (at least in my mind) that those things are going to hold like motherfvckers in anything but muddy clay. And they're burly.

Bastard, two guys in my LBS bought all the remaining stock in Oz a few years ago and they only let me buy three, they are all worn out now. You could start drifting and know that if you leaned a bit more all was good, with the Phat Alberts I was just running that was not the case.

I agree. The truth is those tires are DH tires with a kevlar bead.
Sounds like the Mavic Charge. I rode them all of last fall. Way bigger than I thought they'd be. Swapped between Hutchinso Squale and Mavic Roam XL on the back. I think you could easily use thE Charge for DH.

If so, I have to come to grips with the fact that brian lopes designs good tread layouts. I'm not sure I'm ready to do that. :D


Guy can't park for **** but he's put his name on at least two good looking tires.

Yeah the BBGs is good dry tires too (although you've been riding one up there haven't you?). Those mocos would have been decent if they'd firmed up the centerknobs. It was a 'less that shltty' design at least.

Maxxis is kind of missing a semi-slicker thing. They need to re-release those blingers with a different name or something. Maybe call it the glistening pectoral, or the high pitch squealer. Although given the pic that started this thread, I don't have high hopes for good decisions being made.

Yep I rode one as a rear till that middle rib was practically bald.

They do have a surprising amount of grip in wet. I wouldn't run them as a dedicated winter tire, but from late May till Sept they work. You can't climb with whiskey throttle applications of torque, smooth pedal power is rewarded. This really just applies to the steeper rooty climbs in the wet. Dirt trail bed is all good in any condition.

I just got a Muddy Marry, Rock Razor combo last night. They are tweener size so won't see dirt till I build a frame. The plan is to have tweener fs bike up and running for the Whistler EWS.

That is the goal. A Heckler/Orange/Xprezzo style single pivot. Tweener wheels with my old reliable 36 RC2 (tossing the Talas out and hacking a spring in it, that fork has been the best $100 used TGR snipe ever). Likely a CCDB Air CS if it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg to get one.

They don't even clog in UK mud.. I've been running blings on the rear all year round for years and years..
Down to my last 8 now (5new, 3 in use) :(

Blings still occasionally come around for sale unused second hand here.. luckily most UK riders have zero clue what makes a good tyre, take one look at them and are too confused to understand, this makes them dead easy to snipe cheap on the classifieds.

A regular ardent with the centers trimmed would be better IMO. Those ardent race tires look like cornering futility. You could lean on the blings in a turn!
I thought they had the same corner knobs as regular ardent, just not staggered?

I ran one in the front in Port Angeles 2 weeks ago in pretty sticky mud. I was running a Muddy Mary in the rear and was suprised how much more mud stuck to it than the Magic Mary.
The knobs are sharp and really hook up w/o being too tall and squirmy. So much that I was having to consciously enter turns later since there was not the slide I was expecting.
I honestly can't imagine a tire I'd rather run in any conditions except hard pan or loose over hard.

BYO: Yeah the overall width of those knobs look really good for wet stuff as far as penetration in the soil. I just wish they'd put sensible angles on the sides and they'd work better when it dries out (or hell, just make them straight). It wouldn't hurt the wet performance at all. I think I was creating a mental image of those things as being more like the rock razor centers with a lot closer spacing. I just went back and looked and I wouldn't have asked that question if I'd really remembered what they looked like. Those and the muddy marys (and dirty dans) still look like the best thing they've got going. I just think they could be a little better. I think that about most tires though. Like I've always said, my vitriol stems mostly from some of their older designs.
