Angleset problem

I have the problem too!!

Can someone recommend a good alternative non-angleset headset to get? I don't need this problem.

I talked to an Intense factory rider at the Open last weekend. He said he loves the thought and idea of the angleset, but doesn't think it is ready yet for the DH bikes. He quit using it and is just using a straight headset. He said he was tired of having the issue and thought the adjustability was not needed.
I just installed a regular Cane Creek 40zs49. (1.5 to 1.125 reducer) headset. The cup tolerances were fine and it went in nice and solid. The 40 uses steel bearings rather than stainless, but the 110's stainless bearings will drop right in if these rust out.

I don't recommend the Acros Ai-25 or Chris King (as cool as they are). Not sure if they found a decent way around the Cane Creek patent yet. I wish they would just suck it up and pay CC for use of their design.

i got the Series 40 too but its a cheap headset.

CK uses a split ring now since CC doesnt have the patent anymore. id still use their headset even with their o-ring design. ive had less problems with their headsets then i have had with CC.

O Rly?

I had nothing but trouble with an o-ring King on my current DH bike. Swapped it for an IRD somethingoranother and haven't looked back.

I've also had pretty much exclusively good luck with CC, so clearly YMMV.

rly.
9-10 years with a CK and not a single complaint. 2 years using various CC headsets and nothing but problems. ive had better luck with Hope's reducer headset as well.
Heh. Like I said, YMMV. Admittedly I've only owned one King but it blew goats. Bunch of CC headsets treating me nicely on various bikes.

It seems that the problems with the Angleset is not the gimbal/cup interface, but the less than stellar tolerances between the bearing and the gimbal. The bearings really have too much room to move around in the gimbal. It would help if the bearings were pressed in the gimbal...but then we'd all be complaining about the price of a set of replacement gimbal/bearings. It's a neat concept that I'm sure they'll improve on in later versions.

I have had good luck with Kings, I did wear out a top cap, but it was from a set that had migrated over 3 bikes, that I got used in the 1st place; Got another hooked up and good.

I thought I had the issue recurring towards the end of last year, but it turned out I had just ovalized my headtube...

:p

I've had kings on all my bikes.

The angleset is serious in its own league.

New king is for sure better, the old bearing system can be trouble if you dont keep that washer, specialy on a trials bike.

Ok , for anyone that is looking for an alternative to the Angleset I just replaced mine with one of these, much smoother feel and no issues whatsoever. No it's not adjusatble like the Angleset but just feels more solid and it's not that expensive either. They also come in a few different angle configurations and use the same bearings that Cane Creek use in the Angleset.

2 days on mine so far, smashing rocks and overall early season riding, no sounds on my session. -1.5°

I think the key is the shims between the top cap and the bearing. I have 2 in there, and i can really notice them loading up the bearing.

its like learning a new bike almost. REAlly fun on steep stuff, and generally falling off the back chasing faster peoples

well apparently Intense thinks its a issue since they arent supplying the Angleset with the M9 anymore. its a upcharge if you want it with your frame.

Angleset on my Nomadc with 170 lyrik is knock free.
Light greasing, a little tighter than usual, and it's been great.

Re: Intense, if they're still offering as an upcharge I doubt it's due to doubts about the product. More likely, most owners didn't use the feature and therefore didn't see the value in it being included. Those who want it can buy it.

They probably got sick of answering phone calls/emails from people who couldn't set it up.
If they thought the product was junk they wouldn't offer it at all.

There was also no problem with early boxxers, that was all user error.
Funny! Manitou blows it with SPV, MZ has 50% issues for 2 years, and these 2 get the brunt of disdain. SRAM/RS regularly fails for 8 years and they get a pass.

Talk about kool-aid.

My Angleset has been behaving, but any twit that wants to put it on my wrenching - Im down to 'battle' any time.

Either I don't ride fast enough or I have blocked all annoying noises that I have not heard a clunk yet. Probably a combination of both

Just yesterday my friend was complaining about his.
I watched him install it, seemed like he did it correctly according to the video. But he is getting the clunk.

Another guy I ride with is using the K9 angle cups on his DH bike before the angleset was released and hasn't had a single issue.

I'm betting it's a qc error as half aren't having issues and half are. Mine started clicking again this weekend but i replaced my fork without resetting the hs so that may have been it. I reset it after and it's been fine.

Don't know if I'm really contributing to this thread or not but, mine has now seen 2 races, a couple of days at Whistler and a couple of days of shuttling and remains joyously click and knock free.

I've got to say I'm damn near certain this isn't a user error problem, though I'm glad I got one of the good ones ;)

Has anyone seen a trend yet between single crown forks and dual crown? My own personal experience lends that all the single-crown guys have been trouble free whereas all the trouble-makers have been on dual crown bikes... Would there be a correlation there for some reason?

yep. i dont know anyone who has had issues on their sc bikes. maybe the added leverage of the dc makes the problem more dramatic

After the initial pop after the 1st installation, my angleset was cool for about 3 weeks... Yesterday I did a small drop coming off of a small steep hill and crack it sounded like I broke a large branch. Reinstalled it following the instructions from the video's, used anti seize and even tried a different fork(I have a 180 fox so I wanted to make sure the problem was with the headset)... Stupid thing kept making that cracking sound when jumping off small 8 inch curbs. Did another reinstall and gave it A LOT of pre-load now the noise seemed to stop. Will see how it goes tomorrrow. I have a standard headset already on the way as I have a feeling this thing isn't gonna play nice over time. Love the idea and the extra slackness, but want something that is more reliable and quiet.

Where do you order the pro edition from?
